Elon Musk gets billions of subsidies, but I should worry about Hollywood and their gift bags... That Hollywood paid for and didn't come out of my tax dollars.

Hollywood doesn’t even pay for them - the bags are all given by the supplier in order to be associated with nominated celebrities.

Just to clarify, these ‘promotional gifts’ are advertising/marketing write offs for luxury companies that are used for extreme overinflated values that offset the company’s real revenue. Meaning these are tax write offs that are used to reduce their taxes significantly while s...

Highly-paid workers -- and that includes actors -- are still workers. The enemy is not the man who makes millions for his work, but the man who makes billions for doing nothing at all.

People have a problem conceptualizing big numbers. A lot of people hear "several million" and "several billion" and just kind of think, "yeah, there are both big numbers." "Both groups are really rich." While the actors are rich, the magnitude difference between them and the b...

Absolutely correct. Also, not everyone nominated is a some kind of millionaire. The vast majority of people in this industry make very normal working class wages on par with other union jobs.

Items/experiences valued at 346k is not the same as items worth 346k. They don’t buy the gift bags, those companies are giving their stuff away for free to the A-list actors as a marketing tool, hoping that they either become repeat customers or post about it online so that ot...

I don’t know. Workers getting rewarded with gifts for nominations by a separate body doesn’t really seem like an issue. They’re nominated, and everyone nominated gets these gifts, regardless of fame status or income.

I’m more concerned about the waste happening in Iran and with Israel right now. Rich people wasting their own money is one thing. The government wasting my money is another

Oscar nominees are workers.

Just quit watching them. No viewers means no ad money for all those shitty actors' gifts.

I don’t care about Hollywood rich people doing Hollywood rich people things. Those actors are in a union. And when they do productions, they work with union workers. Represented workers who bargain for decent salaries and benefits (though it could always be better). Being ...

They have to opt in to get the bag and not everyone does. It's for advertising more than anything. This has nothing to do with worker wage disparity. Class disparity maybe but this title is dumb. Maybe don't expect facts from Bored Panda freelance writers who just lift article...

As long as it’s not taxpayers money, it’s fine. So what? You watch their movies and follow them on instagram that’s the reason they charge $20 million per film.

Yes that’s ridiculous but keep in mind the number is totally made up. This is the “retail value” for wellness retreats and hotel stays. Those prices are pulled out of asses.

I wonder how many celebrities are self aware enough to understand why in their lives the fact that this exists is exactly why there raising of awareness will never resonate enough to inspire actual change for good in communities

The thing about this is. Why do the most unproductive people in society gain so much? Yet the productive workers, the people that keep the economy going, the cars on the road, and these jobs with record breaking profits get nothing but table scraps? Makes no sense whatsoever.

Historically, actors were marginalized due to their perceived lack of authenticity and their association with social instability. Because their profession required them to "lie" or mimic others for a living, many cultures viewed them as inherently untrustworthy or morally susp...
