My school district just did a reduction in force. I was a casualty as I was in my first three years in the district. I am sorry you are experiencing it as well, but I suspect this is the beginning. I am expecting more layoffs moving forward in future years. Of course zero po...
I’m in Texas, it’s happening here also. It’s frustrating because we always hear “in need of teachers” so make it make sense??
Hisd is closing schools, but I haven’t heard this yet. I do know they are hiring new teachers that get paid less than experienced ones.
It’s happening everywhere in my state.
I got non-renewed so I wouldn’t get tenure next year. Nothing wrong with my performance. The kids love my class. I am angry and devastated. Speaking to the school board fell on deaf ears. I am in year ten of teaching and have never garnered tenure. I am so tired.
Took my wife 18 years to get tenure. Kept getting bounced around from district to district as they would cut Art and STEM classes. I feel your pain today.
That’s awful. I’m sorry that happened to you 😕.
So many questions. With class sizes getting smaller, the country actually has a chance to rethink education and make it work the way it should. Yes, fewer people are having children, but the number of adults working and paying taxes hasn’t drastically decreased. The money is ...
What do you mean classes getting smaller? OP said they have large classes and they will get even larger. Do you mean in your state?
The number of students get smaller, but the classes don’t. Each student down takes money with it, and classes will get collapsed to keep down staff costs. We do need to rethink it, yes. But the public seems to apt to punish teachers in general for the failures of our entire ...
so sorry this is happening...something similar happened last year and I was nervous because I was not part of my principal's inner friend circle...
They get to pick and choose? Do you not have a union?
Just had a big governing board meeting where they said our options were to cut teachers and increase class sizes or cut the teacher’s annual raise but keep current staff numbers. There was a LOT of discussion and a lot of argument from teachers about what is the district offic...
It’s a common and unethical bargaining tactic. You voted correctly.
Any mention by the board of also cutting administration raises or positions?? 🦗 🦗
This is all by design too. Republican state legislatures and Republicans have been cutting taxes, and cutting taxes, and cutting taxes to put more and more and more strain on public services (which includes public education) putting MORE burden on educating children on propert...
Well it’s happening in the California Bay Area, too.
Eh. Education spending per student is up [35% (inflation adjusted) in the US over the past two decades and while enrollments increased 4% over that time school staff increased 22%](https://www.educationnext.org/teacher-salaries-fall-despite-dramatic-jumps-in-per-pupil-spending...
Trump loves the poorly educated. America is an embarrassing place.
I haven’t heard about that in Virginia just yet. Thank you for putting this on my radar.
I’m in CA and the past few years there have been tons of layoffs in districts all over the state. It’s supposed to get worse in coming years. I live in a VHCOL area. They’re talking about closing entire schools. Part of the issue is that the population is very old, and they j...
We’ve yet only had expansions and hiring fairs. C.F; I know there’s a hold on positions that were supposed to geminate, such as ESL positions in rural areas.
Virginia doesn’t have enough teachers - no real Union here so pay and benefits are not enticing to many graduates. Some districts will just lose retiring teachers and not replace them though.
I understand it mathematically. I know my district cannot raise property taxes by more than 4% without applying for a special circumstance with the state….. something no town council wants to do… But I remember an old boss telling me “you can’t save your way to prosperity” wh...
Our budgetary people have a tendency to invest in the wrong things. When times are good they go on spending sprees and invest in vanity project. When times are bad they claim to be out of money. It’s just what governments do.
I think individual schools are guilty, too. Our school wastes *so* much money doing things the easiest (or even just the conventional, “it’s always been done like this”) way.
There are fewer students. The need is less and we will see that in hiring - and if not, in firings. You can’t keep hiring teachers at the same old pace if there are fewer students
"We have no money for education.. now, here's another war in the middle east" - 'merica
Per student [spending in the US is on par or higher with other developed countries](https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator/cmd/education-expenditures-by-country) both in raw numbers and as a percentage of GDP.
I’m guessing they’ll also continue to waste money on tosas, unnecessary admin positions, gadgets that don’t work, ridiculous PD, vanity constructions on campus, and other ventures we can’t see.
This! They don't know how to properly use funds and waste it on ridiculous shit that doesn't help.
Absolutely!
Some of the best teachers I’ve ever had to pleasure of being on a hiring committee for are getting moved and laid off at the end of this year. I just can’t understand why we can’t fix this issue. This is a major problem in our field. Why would anyone want to become a teacher a...
Declining birth rate and an increase in people sending their kids to charter schools or home school because of behaviors in public schools. The PE teacher at my school told me the other day “I can’t send my kids to public school. It’s not fair that they have to sit in a classr...
> Does anyone have any information on what is causing declining enrollment in the entire country? [Millennials and Gen Z aren't having babies at even close to the same rate as previous generations.](https://carsey.unh.edu/publication/factors-contributing-demographic-cliff-...
This is my 4th straight year being laid off. It sucks and being a year to year employee the past 4 years at different schools is making me consider leaving teaching for something with more stability. I am 6 years in and I am over this temporary contract game I find myself in.
I left teaching and went into corporate and have been laid off three times in five years. Seems nothing is stable these days. Maybe blue collar work? Idk man. This economy is terrible.
Start cutting admin. School districts are too too heavy and they just pass all their work down to teachers anyway.
This! Teachers should be the last cut. Those admin and instructional coaches don't do a damn thing.
West coast and my district is cutting a lot of positions but not teachers.
I'm in Sacramento, and expecting to get a pink slip in the mail this weekend. Not sure how many teachers will ultimately end up being cut, but we're definitely losing classified staff and basically the whole DO.
What part of the country are you in?
West. State neighboring Oregon. I don’t want to give too much info away because I know my coworkers are on here.
In our ES, they’re cutting class sizes (avg around 17), cutting/“de-staffing” teachers and maxing out class size to 25. In elementary school.
My district told us all to expect max sizes (30 in kindergarten, 33 everyone else). But because the city is full of bullshit charter schools that start "counseling" kids out as soon as the federal money hits Oct 1st, if you start the year with 33 1st graders you will have 40 b...
Yeah, at my school our classes increased to about 32 students per class, which I think might be the max allowed by fire code based on the square footage. 🤣
What state? I’m a new (first year in induction) teacher in Northern California. Our district gambled on a bond measure that failed, which means a huge reduction in staff and sections. I did my student teaching at this high school and my department chairs would keep me if it wa...
Shitty position to be in. Tell them the truth and say no, and that you would love to reach out again in one month to see if anything is open.
My state is experiencing the same thing. In a school with 800 students, they had *added* admin and counselor positions. We now have 3 VPs and 3 counselors. And teacher positions are getting cut. Class sizes are getting bigger. It’s so frustrating.
Sounds about par for the course.
If it's happening because of declining enrollment, why are class sizes also getting bigger?
I assume the cutting of teachers will require taking two tiny classes and combining them into one large class.
Because they’re firing teachers and shoving the remaining students all into the smaller amount of classes.
Fewer teachers = their students get added to other teachers’ caseload.
So the 12 new teachers got to have a year-long final interview for two spots.
Yep - they his San Diego Unified just yesterday, but they're cutting Classified positions instead of teacher positions. You know - the staff that keeps the school running so that teachers can teach. Librarians, noon duties, custodians, lunch staff, para-educators, groundskee...
I was officially unofficially told that because our town didn't pass the budget (which the school board recommended not to at 5-0), my position was one that would be cut. I'm a business teacher, and there isn't a huge demand in my state. I switched to teaching 3 years ago aft...
To be fair the issue in WA is not new. Our funding structure has caused this to slowly happen over the last 10 years. I am one of those teachers likely to be cut from my school (2nd time in the last 3 years) due to budget cuts.
Notice how it’s never the top admin positions that are making 150k, 200k, etc per year that get cut…. My districts high school alone could come up with almost half a million reducing the top 5 highest paid admin salaries to 100k (and 100k is a comfortable living in my area, e...
Most contracts have a LIFO clause that can be either building or district based. In my old district in my third year they announced layoffs. I was in a panic. I called the union and asked where I was on the bump list. They said I was #26. I thought in a large district, there...
14 are getting cut at mine. I'm over in North Carolina (the triangle). Same reasons, enrollment and budget stuff. Seems to be a trend
It’s awful! I hope they all find new jobs!
I'm a retired teacher. Another way to explain it is,"Making America dumb again"! People with money will send their kids to private schools. Good teachers will look for better ways to make money. What's left? Poor kids, immigrants, huge classes, and teachers who hate their jobs...
They hired 12 and are firing 10? lol whose running that budget department
I am in Colorado and work in an ECE program which is largely Head Start funded. We also have a state funded program CCAP Child Care Assistance Program, this finds a big part of our funding, thanks to governmental bull crap this program is on a semi-permanent freeze. If your cu...
Already have in MI I was hired FT over August to sub two districts. Taking sick leave- then surgery over December. Come January ready to return and ---- NO WORK. The one District had laid off several admins. Cutting 4 teachers, Letting go of Subs because of budget cuts ...
This is happening in my kid’s school district. They are looking at 25 layoffs due to inadequate funding from the state. It frustrates me to no end.
I'm in Orlando, Florida. Orange County Public Schools is closing 7 schools for the next year because of low enrollment. Layoffs are currently happening. They are all casualties of the war on free public schooling.
Same in Hillsborough County. Three schools are likely closing, and unit cuts are happening at all levels (elem., middle, and high).
Same here. They are cutting positions and a couple failing schools are being turned over to a charter for the next year. The charter is known for expelling students and they are an "at will" employer. My paranoid voice wonders if they chose this charter in part as a way to fir...
Yep. It’s coming in our district too. They have to cut 24 million dollars and 85% will be on people. So many lives are about to be affected. We should know no later than July 1st.
That’s so late!!!! That barely gives teachers any chance to find another job in a different district? Wtf.
This is happening in my area as well. It’s so infuriating that “declining enrollment” so often means “let’s allocate fewer funds for education.” Teachers are already overworked and stressed, declining enrollment is a good thing. They need smaller class sizes.
If anything cut all those bloated positions on top like instructional coaches. Or move them back to the classroom.
Thank you!!! Sometimes I’m halfway curious why those positions really even EXIST! Like damn, if you don’t think I can teach WITHOUT someone breathing down my neck……then why on earth did you HIRE ME?!
My district is RIFing this year, I made it through but several of my colleagues at school have not. It's hard times, friends
How did they decide? Was it tenure based?
They are cutting two social studies teachers positions at my school. Classes are already at 35 students. Enrollment is on par with last year. Some schools in our district had to de staff in the middle of the year. One school de staffed ten positions. It is getting scary.
I live in Oklahoma and there are tons of positions, more than can be filled. Cons: You'd have to live and teach in oklahoma. Pro: Ok is very low cost of living.
Con: still Oklahoma
Texas teacher here. Tenure sounds cool.
It's so odd because my district is desperate for teachers, while in surrounding areas they are cutting positions because of enrollment. It's interesting to see where families are flocking to, it's booming where I'm at. I feel awful for those getting laid off. And unfortunatel...
is this a public school?…
Yes
We're already bare bones at my school. The class sizes aren't huge, but we'd struggle to put kids in enough credits with fewer teachers. Admin, on the other hand, seem to be struggling to justify their jobs constantly. The district my child attends is planning cuts even thou...
We’re facing this too. We currently have 3 middle school science teachers. They won’t be replacing me when I retire at the end of this year. I can’t imagine stretching 350 kids between two teachers.
Welcome to Trump's America. Tax cuts for the Epstein class, unemployment for the rest of us.
It’s wild to hear so many talk about “admin bloat” as a culprit. My district has 1 person in charge of science elementary curriculum and 1 person in charge of secondary. My district has over 100,000 kids.
Let’s be honest. The schools with inefficient admin discipline structure are the ones with shortages. The schools that have strong admin, or for better or worse, can remove students who don’t want to be there (private schools) are not finding shortages. Budget deficits are a...
My district is closing 7 schools due to the decline in enrollment. This voucher program in Florida has been tough on our public schools.
Happened to us a few weeks ago. I will not be returning. Budget cuts and declining enrollment is killing public schools, and a lot of it is by design. I’m currently teaching a class of 31 students, but the teachers who made the round of cuts have been told to expect bigger c...
We're in the same boat at my school. I teach core classes, am tenured, and work in a department of people who are nearing retirement so I'm fairly certain I'm safe. Still does create a pretty bad vibe in the building though
Declining enrollment gets people every time.
Look up Reduction In Force language in your contract and your state's labor laws. Typically they look at seniority first and then other qualifications. Sounds like they're going to have to determine which ten of those twelve teachers are getting laid off and which two are stay...
My school cut 30 positions last year.
If teachers wore military uniforms we’d have everything we need.
As a vet going into teaching, not even then. The first thing on the chopping block when budgets are an issue in the DoD is all the support programs and stuff for quality of life. But if you're a defense company like LockMart, Raytheon, L3 Harris...they'll rain it all on you...
I was laid off a few years ago when the COVID money dried up. I was so upset. I said to my VP what did I do wrong? She said nothing. I said so I could have just sat on my a@% all year and done nothing and still had the same result and she was like yes. Let me add, they laid me...
Yet another attempt to keep the population uneducated and easily manipulated.
My school had an emergency meeting on Friday. We are losing 5 full time employees at my school and the principal said every school in the district is losing similar numbers. It’s crazy.
See, this doesn’t make sense to me. If your classes will be bigger if they cut teachers, then they obviously need those teachers. If they cut them and your class size wouldn’t change, or would hardly change, that makes more sense. I don’t understand where the money is going. ...
You would think that most Americans want more money for our children's education than to fund bombs for Israel to drop on children.
I’m in Ohio and the republican legislators have decimated our school funding to the point where all districts are experiencing major losses in funding. We just had our financial state of the district meeting this week and found out major staffing cuts are coming too. These pol...
We lost 8 positions at my school, myself included... Our district has the smallest per-student budget in the state while also being the largest geographically and thereby serving the widest range of needs... it's embarrassing. At least it's sparking conversations about alte...
50 layoffs for us. We will find out the week before spring break 🤪
Happening in Arizona too. At least two districts have closed schools now due to dropping enrollment.
Already happening in Nevada. One of the reasons cited is that Millennials aren’t having as many children, so the enrollment is down. We also have lots of charter school competition, and parents are so fed up with the ridiculousness of the local school district, that they’ll en...
Yep. Same. Its hitting a lot of positions that were funded by Covid money first (which my district continued to fund after the money went away), and my school isn't hiring for the open positions being created by retirements.
Indiana has a teacher shortage. If you feel like moving….
I was laid off twice (2011 & 2013) in my first 3 years in the school district of Philadelphia. Eventually I got recalled both times given the shortages Philly always has
I’m afraid they’re more likely to cut the expensive, more experienced teachers first. Scare the younger ones into complying with any bs coming down the line.
Not where I’m at. Depends if tenure and unions exist in your district. We went through this 2 years ago when our levy didn’t pass and first year teachers were told their jobs were on the line.
Its going to get worse with time. Families are having fewer kids. Look at birth rate trends.
Sounds like the US is trying to privatize a lot of schools
The state messed up and overpaid us 400k in the last 2 years so now we are over budget 400k.... The layoffs are happening and it's messy ://
This is happening all over Jersey. I got laid off in October 🙃
It’s the worst feeling. We had that conversation as soon as we came back from winter break. 25 positions are being cut, and they’re starting with the newest hires. I had seniority, so I’m safe, but it’s still a horrible feeling.
2 high schools in my city just closed in the middle of the second semester.
We can't find enough teachers to fill the positions left by retirees and newly added positions because of enrollment increases.
Where?
Yes. My principal did them on Friday. I’m in California. It’s looking like our sped teacher, our social worker, our interventionists, and our restorative justice manager/school manager all got cut. My union just fought with the district for higher pay for teachers and semi won...
Unconventional teacher tip: type your “district name + school board + minute meetings” into Google. School boards usually post their meeting minutes and slides. I have personally done this to see what positions were being cut. I went back to late February minutes and scrolle...
My school isn’t hiring to replace anyone unless there is not a licensed person already to take it over. We aren’t laying off, yet, but we’ve never not hired/ replaced. For once my tech license has become more valuable than my SE license at my particular school, so at least I a...
We still have positions filled by subs 😳 they won't RIF in our district, but they will just not fill positions of people who are retiring or not returning.
It’s sad that they hired 12 new people and did not realize that hey wouldn’t need 10 of them
This happened often in my teaching career. It’s horrible to watch people be chopped, and it’s horrible to wonder if you’ll have a job next year. This instability contributes to the national teacher shortage by prompting potentially great, young talent to go elsewhere, includin...
Yikes..l this scares me. I have tenure, but just applied for DROP which makes me annual with retirement accrual. I’m in Florida. 31 years in the district so hope that counts for something. 🙏🏻
Our district is expanding but we’re losing some positions due to grants running out. We did manage to get another nurse position which was great but a couple others are still in limbo once the grant runs out. Meanwhile districts near me have huge budget deficits. Which also ...
Declining enrollment, but bigger classes?
Yup. Cutting certain staff and taking their students and dispersing them into the teachers that stay.
even tenured u can still be laid off…
They absolutely can with due process. BUT the first to go are the first and second year teachers and in my district we have a lot of them.
T’is a puzzle that the U.S. has no money for public education, but Uncle Sam spends $1 billion daily on a stupid and catastrophic war.
My district sent over 100 layoff notices. It was my first year with the district, so of course I got one too.
Ugh I’m so sorry :( I hope you find something even better.
We are not cutting any teachers this year, but my school will have two new openings to fill due to teachers quitting. In CA.
May I ask what city?
District next to ours cut 10 on Monday. Gifted program gone. And in the 2nd to 5th age range we are now bringing classes from 20 to 25. 1 SRO gone. 1 para gone (so far). Library staff cut.
Not really related but so many schools in our district are on strike
Our district is growing and we are building schools because we are over capacity
Same, each department is losing at least one teacher (hs). For mine (history) it really doesn’t make sense because we have so many coaches. We won’t be able to fill out each section.
I live in a state where tenure isn't a thing anymore, so pretty much anything goes. I made the mistake of telling a co-worker a couple of years back that I was working on a Specialist degree. Suddenly a week later, they said they weren't renewing my contract. Didn't want to pa...
All those 2008 and subsequent years market crash babies are all in high school and starting to graduate. I graduated this year and could not find a job in a middle school, middle schools in my area refused to hire first year teachers.
Look at census maps and find states with increasing population. That's going to be the areas where districts will actually need teachers. There is a national teacher shortage, but it's mostly the areas with growing, younger populations. California and New York isn't attractive...
Have you seen the school districts in Texas? They are all massively in trouble and laying people off.
Iowa here. Same story all over. My district had \~100 student more than expected drop in enrollment, exacerbating the already budget crisis we're in. $10million had to be cut. Losing 20ish staff, no raise next year, a number of admin (who are on year three of salary freeze), c...
Lay offs? Good grief, we don't even have a full-fledged teacher in every classroom here in the South.
No layoffs here. But every district around us is. You can credit the aging teachers in our district-people don't leave-and the pitiful pool of people coming in their first year who seem to think they can't get fired even if they don't show up.
My district is facing layoffs before the end of even this current school year let alone the next. Luckily I have a job for next year but my pay is decreasing. A lot of teachers put sweat and tears into their job only to be let go. It sucks.
What state are you in?
Same here in SE Florida. HS principals in my district have been told to expect to lose 10% of the teaching units at each school. That's 16 units at my school, 15 at the neighboring one, and 20 at another nearby school.
Where?
Ahh, the age old conundrum of declining enrollment resulting in larger class sizes. What a joke, OP, I'm sorry.
My school is losing seven positions. Breaks my heart.
You know what you should guys do is a hostile take over of the administration. Teach what you need to teach. Our government doesn’t care about rules why should you follow them? Fuck following their curriculum understaffed and miserable. Teach what the kids need and refuse to k...
If they’re not the first to go it’s because new teachers in tier 6 are cheaper.
Teacher shortage and cutting staff are 2 conflicting ideas.
Where is this happening?
I'm thankfully retired from teaching in Kansas. I live within the wealthiest school district in the state. They are cutting some of the fine arts programs due to budget cuts. A neighboring district (the 2nd largest in the state) is consolidating elementary and middle schools...
It’s happening in SC as well.
Yep, it’s been happening at my school since the pandemic. Our staff is half what it was ten years ago. The last teacher to be surplused had been at the school for 18 years.
The district figured out the shortfall just now?
Been rif twice. That’s life in the big city
Can you tell us which state for reference?
My district (Southern California) RIF’d over 250 positions last year. Most of them ended up being hired or offered their position back but we’re still losing 3 teachers from my department this year.
I'm sorry to hear this is happening in many places. Meanwhile my small rural district has 5 teacher openings, 2 building principals needed, a tech director, a transportation director, and a superintendent. We haven't had a permanent super in a year. Drawback......I'm in W...
I’m fortunate that my small district doesn’t have any layoffs, but there have been a couple positions cut at my school for next school year. Fortunately there were enough retirements and non-reelects at the other schools that people still have jobs if they want them, they just...
This is why I’m so thankful for my union, tenure, and seniority.
Same. And my health though. My district just cut a teacher with cancer who has been on FMLA all year because she didn't get the ELL endorsement that was now required for her position fast enough.
My school district is closing schools. It’s bad yall
Im in Ma and they’re cutting 3 million from our school budget.
Did the rest of the text not post or is this your whole post?
Consequences of the baby bust combined with soaring rates of homeschooling. If fewer people are having children, there will be less of a need for teachers. If more people are choosing to homeschool, there will be less of a need for teachers
I was also a casualty. Admin and sports were not touched.
It sucks that this is happening, however, times are changing. Homeschool is booming, and for good reason. One scroll through X and it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see why parents are concerned. Public education isnt going away. It will reach an equilibrium point between p...
Happened in our upper middle class large suburban district as well. They needed to cover a 12m deficit.
Has anyone on here looked into regional staff expenditures?
Location and state dependent. If you got property taxes being cut, more people leaving than joining your school system, and state cuts to education But I say cut the 6 vixe principles that make 100k each in lcol like my wife's school
I’m so sorry :( my school laid off 40 last year. They did it by date of hire dictated by hr so drew a line at some month in 2021 and everyone hired after that was axed. Moved to a school that hired 40-50. It’s weird out there right now.
Poi abbiamo però classi prime dei tecnici sovra affollate!
I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m in the same boat as a tenured teacher in a district with budgetary challenges and declining enrollment. My district is looking at eliminating elective departments in order to save money. I’d love to see the chart that plots the creati...
I'm in my first year, and our school in Maryland is having to cut positions, starting with the conditionally licensed teachers. Who needs new teachers anyways?
its lovely to read this as someone studying education in college.
Keep swimming. You may need to move when you’re done to find a slot, but honestly, teachers have just been sheltered from needing to do that. A lot of other majors have always had people graduating and moving to where the job/money is. Some places are having big increases i...
My district and neighboring districts are closing entire schools. I’m in AZ
I was just surplused at my high school and told I could go to an elementary school or go to an elementary school basically. I don’t want that but it’s an unfortunate option since there are talks of shutting elementary schools down in the next two years and consolidating. It’s ...
I am in MT and graduated in 2021. I've yet to find a teaching job. I've been working as a paraprofessional and a substitute instead. With all of the layoffs I wonder if I'll ever get a teaching job.
I’m in CA and they don’t even give options. They laid off 130+ certificated staff and have yet to agree to our annual raise. But we are getting bigger class sizes. So it’s all bad.
