Repitles have basically two settings getting warm in the sun and cooling off which in this case go into water. If you look at the dry or early wet season you'd see a similar amount of crowding and if they all get enough meat their fine with sitting with each other.

Reminds me of a video I saw of them throwing raw chickens into a crowd of alligators and one bit the leg of another and spun around and removed his arm like it was nothing. Other alligator didn't even react.
