Look at it like that. At least you noticed it *before* you get 12+ inches of snow ;)

I noticed some shingles on the roof when we got home from the pool. Called a handyman at noon and they got someone out within a few hours. I had some shingles on hand and it was only $160 to get fixed!

Looks like your ridge cap is still there, you're just missing a strip of shingles that lay over the top. If you can fix it now, good. If not, let it ride. It's not going to let substantial water in, compared to the shingled part.

That’s the ridge vent, which is nailed under the cap shingles. Probably not the end of the world to have it like this until a repair can be made.

Worst case scenario: tarp and bucket in the attic.

It is an option that is off by default. I don't know why someone would turn it on.

i believe it's optional but i may be wrong. i had a friend who had a setting on where the date was stamped on all photos

Right lol?? Bizarre. Idk what kind of people would want some trash like that. Imagine if it automatically added the brand to email signatures too, just so everyone knows you have a certain brand of phone.

Trash bag and a bunch of duct tape to the rescue!

No, do not tarp over the ridge vent, ever. Please don't tell people to do that. They need a pro out for a quick fix. OP, this is an indication of other issues, ask for a full roof inspection when they come out.

Yup! My wife said she heard something but I didn't see anything on the ground. Noticed it when coming home from the pool today. Luckily got it taken care of before the snow rolled in. It's just starting now!

Go get a bundle of ridge-cap shingles and a box of nails from your big-box store. You can probably have this fixed in 15 minutes.

Just wondering - how did you notice this? I would have never noticed something on my roof unless I had a leak.

Saw the ridge cap shingles blown somewhere they shouldn't have been. Roof looked weird when I got home so I went out to take a look and saw those shingles there. Started looking for someone to fix right away. https://preview.redd.it/lrrvc63974pg1.jpeg?width=1154&format=...

I'm not OP. Usually people find the shingles on the ground and then investigate to find where the source.

Ridge cap is still there, you're just missing the shingles. Tarp it down and it'll be fine to handle some snow.

It not ideal because the ridge vent can deteriorate from the sun. But you are still protected at the ridge vent still cover the ridge vent gap. Not an immediate problem, but an important problem. You will weather the storm. Go get a bundle of 3 tap or cap the same color an...

Tarp it as a temp fix or go buy a bundle and fix real quick (easy DIY repair). You might be able to have a local roofing dude come fix that for $50. I’ve had dudes fix easy stuff like this for a little cash.

In the Wisconsin area? Wind knocked down a dead tree in my yard yesterday and by tomorrow it’ll be covered in a foot of snow.

Maybe you can stand up there and brush the snow away before it melts? Or just hold an umbrella, maybe pass the time away singing U-M-B-R-E-L-L-A by Rhianna.

That sucks, good thing you noticed it and can do something about it tho. Do get a good play in the snow for us here in the less fortunate areas, flagstaff is gonna be close to 80 this week.

My roof is way worse than that and has been since December. We lost several large patches of shingles in 90+mph winds in three multi-day storms that were about 4-5 days apart. It was -10 to -20 in the days between the winds. I went up and tacked and taped down some waterproof ...

Mental that Americans have shite roof felt for the roof of their houses and act like it's normal. Get some slate or tiles on that man

0
picofdoria_ngray7
picofdoria_ngray7· 25d ago

It’s not cheap roof felt like you’d roll on your shed or whatever. They’re [asphalt shingles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphalt_shingle) and last much longer.

2
marmite_wueen

Slate works great in low to mid wind environments, but in places that can get tornados and hurricanes they tend to be a bad idea.

For anyone who doesn't know roofing: that black plastic is a ridge vent, which means there is a literal open gap right into the attic under it. OP isn't just getting 12 inches of snow on his roof, he is about to get 12 inches of snow inside his attic.

0
ExoticAttituDa7
ExoticAttituDa7· 26d ago

Eh he’d get some initially but most likely it would be blocked by the volume of snow fairly quickly. Obviously still better to fix it beforehand but it’s not like his attic will fill with snow

4
DragonCalm32
DragonCalm32· 25d ago

Ridge vents are stupid and inefficient anyways. Whole thing will be blocked after an inch of snow
