For some reason the idea of leaving your house unattended for 3 years and not bothering to check if you shut all the windows is very funny to me.
People already working in the military leave home expecting to return. Some do 24-hour shifts and could leave a window open. If you suddenly get deployed, you don’t get the chance to go back and check.

I use a checklist app on my phone for this. (Oven, fridge, kitchen window, balcony door, wallet, keys, front door locked, etc). It tracks when i filled out the list. Otherwise i recheck ten times and question my sanity all day once I leave the apartment.
