Is it normal for a dealership to put 1200 miles on customers vehicle after failed oil consumption test 2019 f150 5.0.

Dealer has had truck for a month asked if they could fill and execute a tank to inspect for consumption. They have now put 1200 miles on it which seems excessive. Is this Standard Operating procedure? Link to more detailed post

That's a shitton of miles and well past one tank's worth. Call them out on it.

Thanks for the confirmation! When they said a tank I figured 600

Once had a Field Service engineer have me put 600 miles on a car. (It was an issue seen on multiple cars so Hyundai had to gather data). We called the customer, let them know. Hyundai then provided a full trim loaner straight from the corporate offices with a gas card and no l...

I've seen at least one story on here of mechanics just using a client's truck to move stuff.

Boss of mine dropped his truck off for some work and the following weekend him and his son went out riding snowmachines (snowmobiles for the non Alaskans), they pulled into a parking lot and his truck was hooked up to a 20’ trailer sitting there in the parking lot.

The miles are during business hours but rather than trips to the city 20mi away like they had said they might do they're going at least 50mi away.

A standard oil consumption test is 1000 miles. They're not going to find anything meaningful from a single tank's worth of driving, unless that tank gives your vehicle over 1000 miles of range. Also, the vehicle is generally given back to the customer for the duration of the...

I’ve had to drive trucks almost all day to try to replicate a problem. I ran out of places to go.

If there looking for oil consumption then yes, not sure about your model etc but VAG cars oil consumption is worked out over 1000 but obviously depends what they are looking for. Normally we used to set the oil level and get the customer to come back after 1000miles but they m...

Normal practice is to make you drive those 1200 miles. If youre the kind of customer they dont want to hand things back to until its fully fixed then theyre gonna drive it till they feel content with it. Oil consumption isnt really all that simple as it sounds.

I had an oil consumption issue with my Subaru Outback that required 1,000 miles driven to diagnose and Subaru told me either they could do it or I could but I had to make sure I brought it back at exactly 1,000 miles so they could do their thing.

I also used to have a 2019 5.0 F150. No kidding, it would swallow a quart of oil every week or two, 50k original miles.

Your f150 gets 1500 miles to a tank? That's impressive.

Yeah thats way too many miles. For an oil consumption test they usually have you drive it yourself and come back after a set amount. Something feels off here. Id be asking some serious questions about where those 1200 miles came from and why nobody thought to let you know first.

The dealership doesn’t put miles on your vehicle period lol. They have you put miles on it and bring it back. Someone was just driving your car around.

They may have used your truck for a run to the border and back. Or dash delivery time.

It's standard to measure oil consumption after 1,000 miles.  They've probably been checking the level all along. Is it still under powertrain warranty?

Oil consumption test is lengthy, that being said idk 1200 is justified. Maybe it failed, they tried a product (pour in kind) and it didn't fix it so they tried another? Lol 😂 not sure. What was final verdict on oil use?

no, we usually tell the customer to bring the vehicle back in a set amount of miles, while we mark the engine with tamper proof markers. at least that is what we did at dodge with our 2.4L recall on oil consumption engines. they had to bring it back at 1000 miles, give or tak...

I would demand they put that many miles on it. They could give it back in 300 miles and tell you its fine then leave you to deal with it. I would be thankful.

When I was a tech we had documented cases of customers loosening the drain plug (we marked it) to intentionally fail an oil consumption test. This is rare but it happened. Depending on the manufacturer, the step after the customer test can be for the dealer to document the mil...

"Failed?" oil consumption test, what's the point of putting all those miles on it? Seems excessive and an unnecessary waste of time. Maybe even misdiagnosis, or wrong trouble tree path. High output smoke machine and leak down. I would've drained it, unhook and capped the PCV...
