It is highly likely that you at no point pressed the 8 button on a microwave.

Look at all these people who don’t know the joy of adjusting your microwave power level
My microwave is strong so I like putting it on power level 2 and cook 10:00min. Food taste soo much better
Yup! Actually, my last reheated meal was done at 80%.
You wouldn't run your oven / hot plate at 100% power, 100% of the time. It's for those who desire perfection from their ionisation, not merely cromulence.
Lies. Krispy Kreme donuts are perfectly microwaved at 8 seconds. It even says it on the boxes.
Even for things that take 8 seconds, I just hit the 30 second button and take it out after 8. It's not like I'm going to go on with my day and wait for the 'ding'. I'm just standing there anyways.
Oof core childhood memory unlocked
Yep forgot about this. I also transferred the same theory to honey buns and 8 secs works perfectly there too
Every time I punch into the microwave is 1:11 or 2:22 or 3:33... I think it's saved me months worth of time over the course of my lifetime.
I try to mix it up like it’s a rotating code to keep spies out. 1:33 on day, 1:23 the next. :78, power level 7… also I feel like it wears the buttons more even
I was just thinking that I often push 88 instead of 90 for a minute and a half reheat. Lazy ole me.
My current and last microwave have had +30s buttons. 99% of the time that's the button that gets used. My current one also has a dial instead of a num pad. I pretty much only use that if I'm only doing 10 or 20 seconds.
I'm actually a mad lad and put random times when heating food. Breakfast sandwich? 42 seconds sounds good. Heating up some chilli? I don't know, 37 seconds I guess.
I’m so glad for this place. Thank you
So you don’t hit the 8 then. OP wins again.
"I could hit the 30-second button...but that seems too long. 28 sounds about right, though." -me reheating a burger
correct. My microwave has a dial. I havent pressed 8 or any number for that matter
My microwave is the same, it's a Breville. I just push the start button in the middle a few times to add increments of 30 seconds and then move the dial to adjust if I really want to. More often I just leave it or I monitor it as the food cooks, pressing the middle button agai...
Does it also have the lever-action shelf-paddle door opener thingy?
Yeah, mine has a few buttons and 2 dials, but no numbered buttons.
Why would I set it to 8 minutes when I can just press the. +30 second button 16 times?
Last night I had something that actually said “8 mins on high”. Of course the auto minutes stop at 6. So I hit six, then drilled the 30 sec button til 8 minutes. Even when it says to use 8, I didn’t use the button 8. Shower thought is pretty on point
"Work smarter not harder" vs "hard work pays off".
Do people not set the time on their microwaves?
Nah, you just trip the fuse at 12.
If my microwaves time is set then someone has broken into my house and made an odd decision.
Microwaves are time warping machines. Watch it without doing anything else and time feels slower. More so the hungrier you are.
I often nuke donuts or other baked goods in the microwave for anywhere from 5-10 seconds, 8 being pretty common for me. But I can see how a lot of people probably wouldn't have
I hit the 30 sec button and then just open it after x seconds go by With the added bonus of not having to hear the beep
IIRC Krispy Kreme specifies 8 seconds to warm up a donut.
Yep, 8 seconds is my "warm up my burrito tortilla so it rolls and folds easier" go-to. At least for the 8" ones. The bigger ones get 12 seconds.
Some things take a minute and a half to cook. 88 is much more efficient than 1:30 or even 90. Those 2 secs don't matter much really. Everyone just makes up microwave times anyways.
88 start - 2 buttons, 3 clicks "Add 30 seconds" 3x - 1 button, 3 clicks Checkmate.
When food cooks in 30 seconds, wasting an extra 3 seconds at the keypad matters.
Thank you! Glad to see I'm not alone in doing this
Not true, I use cook power 80% all the time
If I want to heat something for 90 seconds I'll just hit 88.
I thank this post for unlocking the 88 second mode on my microwave. Almost 90 but not quite, and faster.
My microwave doesn't have individual numbers, just 1min, 10min (never used), 1sec (never used), and 10sec. So 90sec is hitting 1min then 10sec three times.
I think it is mostly USA that uses numpads for a microwave, the rest of the world uses dials for numbers and buttons to add +30 and such. And why would people not use the number 8? I make plenty of food where the recommended time is 7, 8, and 9, so I would use it often..
Yeah, I really don't do why OP's post is getting so much love cause it makes no sense. But I used a microwave with a dial at one point and hated it. And how do the numbers work for longer times?
I use power level 8 quite often. 7 is the most used though
I tend to use 5 most. Wife tells me to microwave something for a minute, I do 2 minutes at half power. Then I let it sit for another minute before I open the microwave again.
Nah. If it says to microwave for 90 seconds or a min and a half and it doesn't have the +30 button, I just hit 88.
I almost exclusively just use the add 30 second button
Yeah I've never pressed anything except "start" which adds thirty seconds, the other options are all nonsense. Same as how my air fryer thinks everything is meat and takes 20 minutes
Jokes on you holding the 8 on my microwave mutes the beeping, late night snacking in a full house has never been easier
My microwave uses a dial so you're right. Lol
It is highly unlikely I’ve ever pressed any button on the microwave other than +30s
I pretty much only press the +30 seconds button
“When this microwave hits 88 seconds, you’re gonna see some serious shit.”
You way underestimate the effect my ocd has on my need to microwave things for very specific lengths of time.
Correct, I don’t have a microwave that has numbers. Just two dials, as it should be
Most of my buttons go unpressed because I just spam the +30 seconds button
Nearly every morning. My 7yo and I have our quick oats to a science and it is 8 heavy. 38g quick oats, 138g water, cook time 1:38, power level 8.
I red a post about someone putting 99:99 and then just opening and closing the microwave when needed until the timer is over.
Just press +30 until I get to the desired temp
I use 8 all the time, 80% power is optimal for heating up leftovers.
Resetting the clock after daylight savings time.
I have actually. I buy these big microwave pot pies and bring them for lunch at work. They require 8.5 mins in the microwave. Unfortunatly, the 8 button on the microwave at work doesnt work, so there I do push 4 twice. But sometimes I eat them at home too, using my fully funct...
I pressed it on Sunday when I needed to change 7:32 AM to 8:32 AM
Extremely likely in my case: I've only two dials at my microwave and no buttons. And that's on purpose: I can switch it on with a single turn of my hand. It makes "bing!" when the time is over. That's it. No annoying constant beeping, no fuss, no fur.
For 94% of the world this is true. But true to reddit form the entirety of the other 6% are here here to tell you your wrong. Never fails
This is wrong. I watched a lot of LOST, and would only microwave my food in increments of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 or 1:08.
I don’t remember the last time I pressed a button that wasn’t the +30sec button. The timer just eternally has a few seconds on it
If I hold down the 8 button on my microwave, it turns off beeps when the timer ends or a button is pressed. I press 8 every time the power goes out.
My microwave would function just fine with an "add 30 seconds" button and a power lvl dial. Nothing else.
Jokes on you. 58 seconds is the perfect amount of time to microwave the water for my tea.
I make pot pies, they go in for 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Checkmate atheists
On one of my microwaves, I press 88 and start really quickly if I want to microwave something about a minute and a half.
Yesterday, my power flickered and I had to reset the microwave’s clock to 11:28. Checkmate.
if i have something that needs 90 seconds i hit 88 because it is faster and easier to enter. similarly for a minute (55 secs)
I was always a fan of the 9 key. Package says 1-1/2 minutes, I’m punching 90 seconds. 2-1/2 minutes? I’m punching in 1:90.
Idk about you, but it’s easier/faster to press 80 for 1 min 20 sec than manually punching it in
My microwave has an “add 30s” button that also starts the device when pressed. I just put my food in then repeatedly tap the button up to the desired time. Super lazy.
8 seconds thaws the ice cream just enough that it's easy to scoop out but not soupy
Nah I pick a random number each time so that all get used. Why not 38 seconds instead of 40?
Actually, I drink instant coffee, and I've fine tuned the absolute perfect temperature, not only that, but so the handle of the mug ends up in the same position I put it into the microwave - 1 minute, 18 seconds.
Wrong, my chimichangas recommend 3-3:15 so I go with 3:08
I have to laugh, there’s a kind of frozen vegetable mix I buy regularly that says to microwave it for 8 minutes. Now the 9 button…..
True, don’t think I’ve ever used a microwave with a numpad
You also could say that you probably only use the 0, 1, 3, and 6. Not too often would you use 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, or 9.
Not true, if you need to microwave something for 1 minutes 30 seconds, hitting 8 twice is much faster and the 2 seconds less time doesn't really matter if the microwave is more powerful anyhow
I have to hold the 8 button down on mine to make it not make sound like dinging when it’s done or button beeps. I bought the quietest microwave I could find and immediately taught myself to make it shut up.
Well well well my time to shine has arrived as I have an irrational thing about numbers. My microwave times always have to end in 8.
My microwave doesn't have any number buttons. So I definitely haven't pressed that button. It just has a knob that you turn to select the time you want.
I would reheat my pizza in the oven and set the timer on the microwave for 8:88. Somehow it felt better to set the timer to 8:88 than 9:28. I also love to cook things in the microwave for 33 seconds or 44 seconds or 55 seconds.
It’s one of my most commonly used. I do 88s instead of 90 because it’s the same number of buttons but easier to press. And 88s is how long it usually takes to reheat leftovers.
I saw something a few years ago on a news story or talk show saying the same thing. So out of spite and just to show my wife otherwise, I started using 48 seconds on things. Ironically it turned out to be a good number for a few food items.
8 seconds is how long it takes to warm a single flour tortilla.
I always bake potatoes in the microwave for 8 minutes and they’re just perfect. I’m 32 using microwaves to cook potatoes for my stuffed bread at least once a week since I was 15.
Whenever there's a power outage, I have to reset the microwave's clock
I used to cook soft pretzels in the microwave and 88 seconds was the perfect time to cook them from frozen. One time I put one in and pressed 88, then forgot to press start. When I realized the microwave wasn't running, muscle memory kicked in and I pressed 88 start, then prom...
Not when pressing the cook time but frequently as my kitchen timer.
Wrong. The button marked 8 on my microwave also silences all of the beeps , boops, and song of completion. This allows me to enjoy my food without alerting competitors for the hottest of pockets.
An insult I once heard was " you get less action than the microwave's 8 button" hahahaha
microwaving frozen vegetables. Typically 45 sec / stir / 45 sec. A bit hungrier, pile in a bit more peas or corn? 48 / stir 48. Many, many, times. I think OP may not have actually microwaved much.
In Japan, lots of microwaves has "8" as "1 minute". So most people press it all the time. In fact, you can't even see the number anymore since it's blurred due to lots of presses.
90 seconds isn't that much longer than 88 seconds. So why hit two buttons separately when I can hit the same one twice?
My microwave is from the last century, it only has one button for opening the door and one for starting it. And two dials.
Press it all the time when I cook a big bowl of instant rice for 8 minutes
i once cooked ramen in the microwave by nuking it for 8 minutes
I absolutely have. Holding 8 down for three seconds mutes that bitch. I hate beeps.
Fun fact, you can cook stuff for one minute 90s instead of 2 minutes 30 and most microwaves accept that time
I don't press anything besides the +30 seconds button
I use the defrost feature prettt often. Prettt common to have 1.8lbs of food defrosting
I forgot some microwaves don't have a dial (knob?)
I press 8 everyday when warming up my dog’s food
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever pressed anything above the five.
Wrong. I changed the clock on my microwave from 9:05 AM to 8:05 AM
My microwave for some reason only had the +1 minute button working these days and I've learnt to work around this.
There's around 20+ buttons on my microwave, this doesn't include the number pad. All these years I've owned it, i only push one. Which is the start button.
I use the 8 a lot for the defrosting mode. 8 means 8oz in my microwave.
I have never had a microwave with buttons only ever a twisty knob. In fact I always have two microwaves and even having double the microwaves of most households i still don’t have buttons! Two microwaves is just convenient when you’re a family of three and you need to heat up...
Joke's on you - my microwave doesn't have any numbered buttons and is controlled with a capacitive dial. Actually, joke's on me. It's the worst user interface in human history.
Wrong, When I want to set some minutes of time I usually just push a single digit three times because it saves time. So I've pressed 888 when I want to set it to nine or so minutes. Of course there are other times I've used it like for setting the power level or setting t...
Correct, this is because my microwave has no buttons, only knobs
38 seconds for an egg scrambled in a custard cup, in a 700w microwave.
If you cook something for 88 seconds, it engages the flux capacitor and instantly cooks it to perfection no matter how much time it's supposed to take. I can't believe people don't know about this.
Mine doesn’t have a number 8 (only a dial) so you are technically correct
8 seconds is perfect for a donut. 10 is too much, 5 too little.
My microwave doesn’t have any numbers so you would be correct.
I've never used any button other than the +30 second one (and the start/stop button)
I only use the quick 30 second button and push it until it adds up to my desired minutes. No start button needed either.
I saw a comedian one time say that all he wants is a microwave with one single button: +30 seconds. I think about that a lot.
My microwave doesn’t even have a number pad.
1:20 is 80 seconds for me just like 1:30 is 90. One less button push.
I always set my time to 2580 because start was under the numbers, so I’d run my finger down the pad and get it going as fast as possible. And I only ever used a microwave for popcorn, so I knew when it was done by hearing the popping slow down to one every three seconds.
There are only 2 buttons on the microwave that anybody uses, the 30 second button which you tap furiously to get the correct time setting.. and stop.
Joke’s on you I realised my microwave table turns one full rotation every 12 seconds I sometimes microwave mugs of tea (don’t ask; my wife likes a weird concoction of very strong tea but only half filled, then topped up with milk). I realised that if I dial in multiples of 1...
Do people not ever reset the clock on their microwave?
fuck you, I'll heat my food for 28 seconds today
<- goes over to the microwave and pushes the "8" button a few times.
I just the press the +30 second button and if it’s less I wait or press it a few times to get desired doneness..
A self proclaimed “professionally lazy” friend in high school used to ONLY set the microwave by pressing the same number multiple times. 1 minute was 55 or 66 90 seconds was 88 2 min was 111 You can’t imagine his joy when the 1 touch buttons were invented.
I actually push it every time I make a breakfast sandwich. 1:48 is the perfect time for the ones with sausage.
I cook things at 80% often enough, I didn’t think I was highly unlikely.
You guys never softened a baked potato in the microwave before putting it in the oven? That requires about 8 mins.
Sticks of butter fresh from the fridge require 8 seconds in my microwave for it to be spreadable.
I put stuff on surprisingly frequently for 80 seconds It’s usually because I run my finger down the bottom two digits and start… just so happens to be 8, 0, start without lifting the finger
I've used several microwaves in my life and I've never seen one with numbers. It's always a dial for the time and a couple of preset buttons. And I think I've only ever seen one with a button to open the door. Maybe is an USA thing.
Power level 80 is nice, and also 80 is 1 digit less than 1:20 which is how long my daughter’s bottle heats for in the microwave. Saves me 1 button press a day.
Bro, all buttons on my microwave besides 2, 3, 5, add 30, start, and cancel could stop working and I wouldn’t notice for months.
True, mostly because my microwave has knobs, not buttons
Jokes on you, I press it every day at work when warming up the sides (Context: I work in a steakhouse and we keep all the fluid-type sides [gravy, green beans, marinara, etc] in 8-quarts in the cooler and every day we heat them back up in the microwave. Each container [when f...
I do. Because I like to make the big pot pies. But it does *nothing* because the express buttons only go up to 6. Then I cry for my terrible diet and press *four whole extra buttons* just to get it to do the thing for 8 minutes.
I just hit the add 30 seconds button repeatedly until I get to my desired time. It’s saved me minutes over the course of my life, I just know it
You guys can afford microwaves with keypads? Mine just has a knob you turn and increase in multiples of :30
I legit just set it to the right time yesterday, at a 28 minute mark. Before yesterday, I’d have fully agreed with you
I wish my microwave *had* an 8 button, but it only has a stupid knob/dial.
Incorrect. The correct amount of time for 4 Weetbix and milk in the microwave is 85 seconds.
If I ever need to nuke something for a minute and a half, I press 8 twice and hit start. 88 seconds, 2 seconds shy of 90 and it is a more efficient use of my time spent by pressing buttons on a microwave
This is just a button that says {8}. Where did the Stanley Parable go?
There are buttons besides "+30/start" and off?
Ever since I saw this xkcd comic, that's not true for me. I end up using 7 through 9 more nowadays. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/nine.png
Impossible for me. My shit doesn't have numbered buttons, just a time dial.
I press it every day because I change the power level to 80% or 70% soooooo
I push 88 instead of 90 all the time because it's faster and only 2 seconds short
Mine doesn't have a number pad. It's just various settings and functions, and the start button has +30s on it, so I just press that a few times. It is the only button that gets used.
I usually turn the power down to 80% when I'm reheating something so my food doesn't get annihalated. Stop microwaving everything on full blast
11 - soften butter 22 - thaw bread/rolls 33 - warm scone 44 - not quite a minute 55 - don't use (but 5+0+0+start gets used a lot) 66 - minute plus boost 77 - warm milk for frothing *88* - warm bowl of soup 99 - heat red beans yeah, they all pretty much get used
I think I press it more than the average person. I set things to 18 seconds regularly if the first 30 seconds doesn't get it quite there.
I cook my maruchen ramen packs for 8m. Nice and soft, full of juice by the end of it :)
Can't decide if having only dials and a pull-open door makes me a microwave king, or a microwave peasant.
