Student came to class early to study course materials.
I figured that if I only come here to vent or protest when students don't do their do the job then I at least owe it to them to arrive here and be happy when they do. Student was in the classroom 30 minutes early. He was reviewing the slides. I was thrilled.

Someone actually came to my office hours today for help with comments on a draft and clearly understood how to get the right direction for draft 2, was polite and pleasant, and I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Sometimes we have good days!
Those students make it (almost) all worth it
I also appreciate the hard workers! I just had a student leave my office hours, and she left only because she was late to another meeting. We spent about half an hour going over her independent research project, and she left with a much clearer picture of what to do, and was s...
The other day I had a student in my social science course excitedly tell me about the Joan Didion memoir he's reading in his required English comp course. It made me so happy.
I wish we could assign stuff like that.
I had something similar…a student recently show me an example they saw in the wild similar to one we discussed in class. It was adorable, and I made sure to tell them how much I appreciated that they shared it with me.
I was grading today and every time someone got a perfect score I cheered out loud (proctored quizzes). I'm proud of them. It's an online class and I don't get a good sense of who is tuned in. It's cool to see they've been paying attention.
One of our English majors walked around and talked to all of us and asked us what qualities we liked/valued in short stories. I lent him my copy of *Winesburg, Ohio.* We're supposed to sit and talk about it after Spring Break.
Some students weren’t raised by wolves! Though actually for some students, maybe wolves would have made better parents!
sometimes there are students there early, but they seem to be mostly sitting silently in the dark

last term a student told me that he had to write a speech for his public speaking class, and he did it on the environmental impact of computer chip manufacturing, which he learned about in my class!
I love this! This week, two of my students told me this has been one of their favorite classes and they’ve learned so much from it. Almost makes up for the couple of students who went out of their way to make this term suck for everyone. Almost.
Woohoo!
Good for him! I would do this on exam day. Got some solid cramming in that 30 minutes.
I love those moments. Having a steady stream of students asking questions during office hours is wonderful.
