Silicon Valley is buzzing about this brand new concept: AI compute as compensation

Company scrip? Nice. Real nice. Just fucking brilliant. Way to go.
This. The technical term is "scrip". You ancestors had to fight and die to get this stuff outlawed.
You load sixteen tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt
This is worse than that, though. Scrip could at least be used to buy food and such. The insinuation in this article is that HR is looking at token spends as part of employee compensation, when it's really a business cost. It's akin to hiring someone for an office job and then ...
Gotta find a way to keep this bubble inflated why not pay the people in magic computer bucks.
I can't help feel this is a recursive loop: >1. Nvidia has money -> invests in Open AI 2. Open AI has money now -> invests in AI startups 3. AI startups have money and need GPUs -> Buy Nvidia GPUs 4. Nvidia has money -> invests more in Open AI 5. \[go ...
Yeah. MEFO-bills worked so well for Germany right before WW2.
Magic computer bucks is Bitcoin?
Dear god

There's more
That sounds suspiciously like they're trying to recast the tools necessary to do a job as compensation *for* that job, and that sounds shady as fuck.
this this this this thiiiiiiis.
this is like Uber leasing cars to drivers and being able to pay for it by driving for Uber.
I was going to say, this is called a "lab environment" for testing. It's part of the expenses a company pays to ensure pushing code changes to production is done in a tested and reproducable way so that things don't break.
If your AI costs more then a Human... just hire an additional human.
*than. Jesus Christ, it's not difficult

Nice looking lemonade stand.
Sock comb? Interesting naming.
Is this like the adult version of trying to pay someone with robux
No, this is the adult version of having to vacuum twice a week for your allowance, but to be allowed to use their vacuum you have to mow the lawn every Saturday, but to be allowed to borrow their lawn mower you have to wash the dishes after dinner and so forth and so forth.
You can also just give people money and then they can use that to buy AI compute time OR literally anything else they want
I would rather buy asbestos.
Can we have some time with the AI bros in person? I’d like to show them my gratitude for the consideration. It’s really quite thoughtful of them!
ChatGPT how do I stop him from hitting me
Company scrip but you can’t even use it to buy goods
Best we can do is paying you in tools to do more work to actually pay your bills.
"just let me have a little more AI. The chatbot made me feel special. Pls, my wife left me and the IRS doesn't believe me about the tax loopholes the AI helped me find. Pls, I need this" We live in a cyberpunk dystopia
AI bubble getting bigger and closer to bursting. They are throwing all the shit at the fan they can find. Hoping something will turn a profit.

With what's happening to our economy, I want to be paid in gold or silver.
This, more than anything, shows just how aware they are of the limited ability to make AI profitable on its own merits.
Anything, literally anything, but improving the lives of the people you share a planet with.
So, let's assume they give me $100k in compue tokens as part of my "package". Those then belong to me, right? I can use them for whatever pet project I feel like, right? I can trade them away, should I wish? If I come up with some sort of amazing money spinner, whilst usi...
Well...at least housing will become cheaper in the Bay...
Inevitable in a feudal system. This is exactly like some dark/dystopian scifi... Great....
These guys are hot boxing their own farts
What in the name of company scrip is this?
Everytime we say “how can it get worse?” It does, indeed, gets worse.
That will fill workers bellies for sure.
Fuck. Off.
It's like in the dotcom bubble where they paid each other with their own products, because they had no money intake and where overvalued. Now even Microsoft does that with Azure gift cards..
Company towns pay wages in chits; everything you need is at the everything store. Dystopic to the umpteenth degree.
I can’t feed my baby with AI compute
As a tech worker if they tried to offer this to me I’d walk
Moron.
Selling access to tools that allow me to be more productive for the benefit of the company as a perk! Ha, no thanks, I'll take the money please.
It's not money, but don't worry, you get taxed on it as if it was!
And can I then use that AI compute time to get food? Go on a vacation? purchase goods and services?
Still trying to make fetch happen huh
They’re setting the stage for paying us in v bucks.

GFY
Maybe the bullies were right
Please can we do literally anything else than this
I don't want to bother reading this, they mean AI credits along with the salary? give me money and I can consume credits myself.. plus, i have a 5080, i don't need that.
Fuck all the way off
The fuck am I gonna do with that?
This has always been the plan. Company towns. Corpo world.
can't wait for the rap songs describing how many tokens they have as a swag
These people are taking the concept of, "eating your own dog food" to a whole new level.
Anything but real fkn money for liveable wages, real jobs for market stimulus, real value in products. All this compute bullshit for WHAT? Keep us more locked into doom scrolling and Amazon orders? Do we need even more tech? I bet you these 1% mfers know the world is about to ...
'Let them eat compute.'
No
Oh it’s like that time my mothers student tried to pay her in kimchi
So having actually read half the article, this isn't suggesting handing out compute as UBI. This is making access to a certain amount of compute a "benefit" for certain tech jobs. You know, you'll get dental, there's a pool table in the office, and you'll have a $5000 a month ...
huh? nobody said anything about UBI. this is basically a [truck system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck_wages), and compute will be a form of [scrip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrip). if you're not familiar, these are practices that have been banned in every developed ...

No.
Trust me, every company is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on bullshit to do single tasks that doesn't work where hiring people to do a single task is "inefficient" and they have to be overwhelmed with duties.
The title is very misleading. The article is not actually about AI compute as compensation like company scrip. It's more like directors wanting to work on bigger budget films, it's gauging the importance of the role based on the resources you'll have access to. This headlin...
