While Americans get saddled with crippling student debt, Finland found a better method.

Yes but how many billionaires do they have? What about people with extra houses. See they don't have that!
Finland could actually be the country with most extra houses per capita
Finland 1.25×10^-6 billionaires per capita USA 2.37×10^-6 billionaires per capita 2024 estimates https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_billionaires https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=7+%2F+finland+population%2C++813%2F+usa+population
##USA! USA! 🦅
Privatisation is a disease
Privatisation of things funded not by the "customer" but by tax funds is corruption. Speaking as a Swede where private for profit schools are given an amount of tax money per enrolled student. Mostly, it goes as you'd expect.
Dont worry, our current parties in the government have done a stellar job at shitting over all of the achievements our school system reached. The funding is gutted to shreds forcing schools to have less staff and larger class sizes. In the past decade, im not sure exactly when...
This is why "just copy Finland" is such a shallow talking point. What people admire is largely the older version of the system, before years of underfunding, overcrowding, broken promises, and screen-pushing consultants started eating away at it. The lesson is still useful, bu...
Propaganda works better when the people/general public is too stupid to think for themselves
I’d also add some other obvious ones to this list. Prisons, probation, or any system that disadvantages people — so ICE, deportation services, etc. Insurance companies. I think insurance companies being for profit only leads to ever increasing insurance rates and it has to i...
Just because we don't have private schools in Finland, doesn't mean that everything isn't going to shit.
Accurate. The fact that your comment was down voted proves you're right.
So did India. Now the non-profit schools pay "Management Fees" to their owners...
Any government contracts should require not-for-proft
Most hospitals are non profit. Plenty of ways to milk the cow.
I’d add decoupling school funding from local property taxes, as that just keeps poor areas poor
It's because once schools became only publicly funded, the only way for the rich to have better schools for their own kids was to voluntarily raise taxes. Higher taxes meant more money would be available for schools, and they have flourished since.
Meanwhile Sweden is decreasing in education quality every year, also on an unrelated note, Swedish right wing parties have spent the last 20 years selling out our education to for-profit venture capitalists and funding their schools with tax money directly pulled from public s...
Dont worry mate, we are also decreasing in Finland
All profit motive does, is provide a motive for profit. That’s it. Not for what’s best for customers, what’s best for society, what’s best for the workers. Only what’s best for the owner or shareholders and only in a way that gives them money. I always see passionate people b...
Anytime we talk about how a system in another country may work better and say its something we should learn and adapt to. The dumbest individuals come out of the woodwork personally offended that the united states isn't 100% perfect and start those annoying little quips like o...
I guess I’m one of those people, except for the personally offended side. It is a legit observation, but my question to it, is how do you incentivize the doctors or educators to put in the years of work needed in those fields?
Oh this again? We've been in a freefall in terms of education quality in recent years. ...I mean you can pretty easily blame it to economic right wingers and cutting on education resources constantly. Than you for admiring my country but don't go full Finnaboo. Please don't...
The rich need to be incentivized to ensure public education is of the highest quality and the best way to do that is force their kids to attend public schools. In the US the rich pay taxes for public schools but send their kids to private schools, so they are heavily incentivi...
It's by design. They only want the rich families smart, and the poor dumb.
No profit in education, healthcare, or Prisons.
I am so sick of the way we do things. Other countries are taking care of their people, and the USA just lets a few operate outside of the laws and lie, cheat, and steal their way to life-changing money. Some of us want to retire, take vacations, and generally relax throughout ...
Yeap which is why I want to go back overseas. Americas content with stuff like this is driving me insane.
We don't have for-profit schools but university students basically have to take student loan to be able to live unless they are working at the same time or living with their parents. For instance I have student debt for 30k and still have a year left of my masters degree.
Now, THAT is a first world country !
Add prisons to the list and now we’re talking!
Or housing.
Now do it for housing and food and everything else required to live.
Housing either
Most colleges and universities in America already *are* non-profit. Lack of funding is the issue, not profits.
The different between most and all is massive. As long as there are bolt holes for the rich to escape to, they have schools by the balls. It does not take many private schools to completely insulate the rich.
Finland is most definitely not in the top 3 for education
Yet if you go to certain kinds of churches in a specific network out here, they'll tell you that God wants you to be poor because of some vague reason and the rich earned being born on third base due to some spiritual shenanigans. The Prosperity Gospel bullshit needs to die,...
Or prisons.
99% of us understand this.
But if education and healthcare are easy to obtain, how do we keep the population ignorant, sick, fearful, and voting for Republicans?!?!?!?!
Truthfully, reinvesting profit is how every company should be forced to operate. There should be absolutely zero dollars going to corporate greed. If you can't make a company work on a 6 figure salary, you shouldn't be making 6 figures.
absolutely this.
Finland has the best educational results in the world because they did actual research on what creates the best results. It's a prestigious, well-paid job that requires a master's. If after a few years you are not considered a good teacher, there's a path into other careers,...
Said it in the other subreddit this was posted to, in the US the school districts where rich people live get more funding than the school districts where poor people live, so even without private education we'd still have worse education for poor people. Banning private school...
finland really said "no profit for you
Or medicine
there should be no profit in education, healthcare and prison systems.
Or prisons.
In the 1960s America also gave the president the power to waive all student debt and then Biden ignored that law for four years.
Also no religious schools
It seems that not a single person at the US Board of Education has considered how much the US has lost because too many brilliant people were deprived of higher education because they could not afford it.
Oh no, we’re bringing paid education back in Finland. Neoliberal bullshit. We’re literally trying to ruin everything we had an advantage over the US on.
Agreed that public is obviously better than private, but tbh we shouldn't copy from them too closely as their numbers have been dropping in recentl years
I doubt there are many profit schools in the whole Europe in general. It’s not something you can make lots of money from
So how do you incentivize the doctors or the educators, how do you attract the needed people to put in the time and effort? Whether we like it or not, many of those people put in the effort because of the profitable return. It would be great for society, and while it’s bee...
Incentivize them to do what? Finnish teachers still recieve a salary.
>So how do you incentivize the doctors or the educators, how do you attract the needed people to put in the time and effort? By paying them. If you look at any country successful in education, you notice that teachers are paid fairly well. >NYC alone has about 3 millio...
Guy‘s Finnland is still a capitalistic country. That‘s not what we should want to have..
