It's odd that in popular culture, calculus is viewed as a sign of brilliance

In the grand scheme of things, calculus is not that difficult, and not much tougher than high school algebra. The thing about calculus is while the concepts definitely touch things that are not intuitive, it's still a very procedural field. You are just doing simple operations just like in algebra. It's not like advanced mathematics where you really need to know how to logically prove your arguments, you just need to know how to use the formula to compute derivatives and integrals.
