Your late oil changes
But people say you can go 10,000 miles on an oil change.
to be fair. someone's. When I did the chain on my car, the state of the head did not match the FSH it came with! Clean, flush and fresh fill had the VVT engine far peppier
Dark roast 5w-30 ☕️
Lol that's oil so dirty it's almost solid
It’s turning back into a dinosaur
What do you suppose the age of that oil would be if say it was the last oil change that turned that black? I'm usually so good with changing my oil but I just did mine yesterday after I'd say a year and a half because life...
All those times you told yourself I'll change my oil next week.
After I put that sweet sweet light bar on
Delayed oil changes will do that.
Time for valvoline restore and protect. Or a new motor in due time.
R&R is awesome and definitely the solution here
sometime that sludge is the only thing keeping that engine alive haha
that black stuff is tens of thousands of miles ignoring basic maintenance
Sludge from not changing the oil correctly and possibly from cheap low quality oil.
Or from a poor engine design that is prone to sludging.
This has nothing to do with "how" the oil was changed or the quality of the oil that was used. It is 100% due to not changing the oil frequently enough.
Its called Lackofoilchanges.
All the money you (or the previous owner) saved by not doing oil changes on time. Lucky you.
I would call it an irresponsible owners tight arse neglect .
That’s oil sludge. Caused by low quality oil and/or long oil change intervals. This is why is important to change oil and filter at least every 5000 miles.
My Twingo engine (0W40/5W40 every 10 000km) https://preview.redd.it/qit7gofgk8pg1.png?width=622&format=png&auto=webp&s=581017ac35e02adbaa025273f0dde8786bc93e01
TWINGOOOOOO
Just because the oil jug says 20k mile protection does not mean you should go 20k miles between oil changes
It depends on the vehicle's recommended interval, but I've personally seen cars on 10k oil change cycles with ZERO sludge 👍
It’s the death of your engine.
How late are your oil changes? I go almost 10,000 with full synthetic yet didnt see nearly this much build up when I had the valve cover off.
10k! I cringe while starting my truck if I'm at 3k and haven't changes the oil yet...
10k? Never for me
You change your oil? I just add oil to mine since it burns a qt every 2 weeks lol New filter every 3 months tho
It’s lack of proper maintenance.
Oil sludge and varnish, you need to be changing your oil more frequently, I do mine every 10-12k km on my 89 prelude and it looks much better at 580k lol
Carbon deposits from oil coking due to lack of on time oil changes.
Oil breaking down and turning into carbon.
This is why routine oil changes with quality oil is a good idea. You can try an engine flush (liqui moly, BG 44k, etc.) and start using a quality synthetic oil and do more frequent oil changes for a while.
I think the only flush that'd work on this, is the BG Dynamic Engine flush. But at this point, it may do more harm than good.
Do not use any engine flushes at this point. It will release all the sludge and carbon deposits at once and can block oil passages and cause catastrophic failure - speaking from experience. The best thing to do here is to use a "cleaning" fully synthetic oil (Something like ...
Ouch... That's what it looks like when you do 5k plus oil changes. Switch to Valvoline Restore & Protect and start changing the oil at 3k like normal. Should clean it up after a few oil changes. Obviously get as much of that crud out while you have it open without contamin...
This! My car is loving the restore and protect. Next oil change gonna include some BG MOA Engine Oil Supplement.
That's dirty oil, well, not just oil, that's what was in the oil, imagine using the same detergent water to wash your cloths for six months... What would you have stuck to the sides of your machine? This is the automotive equivalent because this gets hot.... your oil gallarie...
Poor oil maintenance
Old oil and engine middlings.
5k miles or every year, whichever comes first. I bet there's so many engines on the road that look like this. People drive more and maintain their vehicles even less.
Valvoline Restore and Protect pronto!
Sludge.
Lack of oil maintenance
Performance robbing sludge.
A definite lack of on time oil changes. Eww.....
It means you're not a very good car owner.
That is evidence that oil changes didn't happen frequently enough.
Neglect
Everyone crying about the sludge in there, but real mechanics know that this baby will run just fine for as long as you need it to 🤷🏻 also, DO NOT try to get rid of it lol...
That's a picture of procrastination.
That's all the money that was saved on oil changes.
Lack of maintenance
I’ve seen a lot worse. This ain’t too bad.
Not changing oil on time, sludge build up. Use better oil with detergents that will help clean that up. It will take time.
Evidence.
Carbon and combustion Soot! As oil goes through cycles, contaminants are blown through your piston rings and get into your oil, hence why used oil is black. As it sits for longer, heat cycles will crust it onto your parts. Change your oil!
The correct term for it is neglect
Carbon deposits
Oi mate that's Vegemite 🤣
How is someone doing this level of work have no clue what that is it why it's there?
Motor oil
Sludge
Lack of oil changes
Thanks for posting on /r/MechanicAdvice! This is just a reminder to review the [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/about/rules/). Rremember to please post the year/make/model of the vehicle you are working on. **If this post is about bodywork, accident damage, pai...
Earl
If you have to ask that question you probably shouldn’t be opening up an engine
Pain in the ass
That black stuff was supposed to be oil lol
This is what your motor looks like using Pennzoil 30w
5,000 miles is not too often especially with variable valve timing which is almost, if not all, modern engines.
I had a motor paper route and I change the oil about every 3 weeks. I put 120 miles a day.
Neglect
Hmmm, looks like a Toyota engine? Hopefully its a very high mileage. otherwise thats not a good sign on a young engine.
Crap from late oil changes If you think it’s bad at the top wait until you take the sump off
Too many postponed oil changes. AKA - the black death. It's not the end of the world, as it's not too bad, but it means the life of the engine has been shortened.
You’ve turned refined oil back into crude oil.
Change your oil every 3,000 miles man
That is called neglect
Old oil that turned into gelatin because the oil changes weren’t done regularly
Vintage bmw
That is the building block of the universe. Carbon.
Neglect.
Engine stuff
Oil that has burn inside the engine you need to do engine flush n change your oil more often to be able to clean more of that burn oil = sludge oil
A fresh oil change and some sea foam then run it for a week change the oil again youll be fine back to golden goodness
Its called lack of maintenance (on time oil changes missed)
Sludge. Usually caused by not changing your oil enough. I’d try using Valvoline restore and protect and change oil 4-5k every time. Use the proper viscosity
Varnish and sludge - not good
Reconstituted dinosaur
Your lack of oil change maintenance
A friend of mine in high school said “add oil, change oil, what’s the difference?” I showed him the difference when we replaced his shortblock in my driveway.
You should do a before and after Valvoline Restore & Protect YouTube series after like 2 years worth of oil changes (on time this time).
That build up is from waiting too long between oil changes.
Lack of timely maintenance is what that is.
LoL 😂
Try Valvoline restore and protect over your next 3 changes and open her back up see what she's looking like. I swear by that stuff now
A quart of marvel mystery oil before the next change, let idle for 30 minutes, see what happens.
1 owner never changed oil ;)
Damn. My 25 yr old Escape looks better than this. CHANGE YOUR OIL ON SCHEDULE, OP!
Change the oil&filter, add Liquid Moly engine flush, drive it for about 100 miles, change oil and filter again.
That is what happens when you neglect you vehicle maintenance.
Get an engine flush done and it should be as right as rain. Lower your oil change interval from 15k km to 10k. It might even be worth while to do 5k for the next few. Good luck! https://preview.redd.it/70hqwu9to9pg1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1cc14f28...

Crust of negligence.
As a mechanic it’s job security

Paraffin wax
Semi solid oil..used to make carowners buy new vehicles or rebuild
Time to get to oil changes with full synthetic every 3k, run Gumout or other cleaner with PEA solvent in your crank case with oil changes, and run Gumout fuel system cleaner or equal cleaner with PEA solvent through your gas tank with a full tank of premium to help break up th...
Sludge. More oil changes more often
Mine looked like this what I did my valve covers and I have always changed my oil every 5k or less
Oirl, heavy oirl, burnt oirl, oirl
In Arkansas we call it Awel
I bought a car like this the black oil particles will clog up your oil pump eventually. Then soon after head gaskets went out it was better to buy a new engine because previous owner never or hardly did any oil changes.
I believe the technical term would be “gook”
That black stuff is called neglected maintenance
Lack of/overdue oil changes or wrong viscosity oil
I think in the mechanic dictionary it’s called «gunk»
Its oil coking
That's listening to manufacturers telling people you've got long life oil so no need to change every 5000 miles but when you engine dies don't blame us 😂
The consequences of (in)actions.

Cooked oil yummy
Burnt caked up earl
10000 mile oil change intervals
Your lack of maintenance, get an engine oil cleaner, like liquimoly engine flush, follow the can and start doing your oil changes every 4k religiously
Lifetime oil change interval.
Varnish
Es el registro detallado de tus cambios de aceite faltantes xd
Change your oil more whoever owned this before you, or you, neglected the vehicle
Old cheap oil
Run royal purple for awhile and see if it clears up over the next few oil changes. 3k per oil change
Ots the rattle amd tick prevention for high mileage engines that haven't had oil changes regularly. If the engine is still running decent I suggest using a high quality diesel engine oil. It has stronger detergents then regular engine oil amd can help clean some of this sludg...
Careful using heavier weight oils (ie 15w40) in engines designed for 0w oils. Some oil pumps regulate only pressure equating to less volume of oil being pumped. This could lead to oil starvation in certain areas, especially at high RPMs.
Over due for deep clean. Need to soak her in a tub of degreaser. Get a bush and some heavy gloves. You got some cleaning to do!
Just change the engine and do a proper maintanance with oil changes every 5000 miles or so. If the top looks like that its probably going to die every second now :) thank yourself for ignoring the basic oil changes
Carbon. You should see your intake valves.
Camouflage under the eyes when we go to war.
Its warm cake
Its death
Just run some Valvoline restore and protect for 10k miles and it'll be clean as a whistle
Using synthetic oil and not changing it on time.
Your engine is toast. The sludge is everywhere inside.
Put the cover on quick!! America may trade you some oil for freedom 👀
They'll make him unconditionally surrender that engine.
How would yall go about cleaning this? Power washer full blast to get rid of it then fan dry?
That "stuff" is a bunch of used car parts.
