Carvana tow driver was picking up a manual transmission Jeep Wrangler from my house today and drove it into my EX's automobile. Poor dude was devastated after.

Who starts a car standing outside of it???

CalmBear386
CalmBear386· 26d ago

More importantly how is that even possible with a stick shift? You have to be holding down the clutch.

1
Angry-Lion585
Angry-Lion585· 25d ago

Yeah, this is entirely on the dude. When you grow up driving stick, you always learn to check it's in neutral/out of gear, handbrake on, and clutch in if you're feeling thorough, before you turn the key.

Oh boy, you'd be surprised! This is why modern cars insist on you pushing the brake down before starting. Surprised this one doesn't have that feature.

Does it not require both the clutch and the brake to be pressed to start it? If not, that explains a lot lol.

Done the same before, but only because I knew mine was in neutral with the e-brake up. But some people prefer to park in gear with no e-brake. Looks like that's what happened here

I’m curious how Carvana is handling this. Are they giving you the money they originally offered for the Jeep and then handling the repairs on the other car?

The jeep was a return so they already took the Jeep back. I'm waiting on a call back from my local carvana hub. I called the customer service number as advised by the drivers supervisor and they are forwarding the issue back to the supervisor I believe. There are three compon...

Fun thing is when the clutch is engaged, it’s in no gear. Dummy shouldn’t have started it without being seated.

Might have a bad e-brake, so they keep it in gear to keep it in place. At least that's why I had to do this for a while

1. Anyone who says that you shouldn't have a manual in gear while parked is wrong. You most certainly should in case the parking brake fails, the engine compression prevents the car from rolling, unless the incline is too steep. 1st gear for pointing downhill, reverse for p...

This is the right answer. There is definitely no "neutral safety switch" on these vehicles (at least in the US), and you should absolutely leave it in gear when parked. Fun fact: if the Jeep is in 4 low, it'll also bypass the clutch pedal interlock, and you can inch the vehic...

It really depends on the vehicle. I have had manual vehicles with safety switch where you had to depress the clutch in order for it to start, and others where you did not. Regardless, I would always depress the clutch and do the wiggle when starting.

Looks like he was flipping it to run to read mileage, but turned the key too far. Without the clutch or brake depressed that shouldn't matter. Unlikely to be fired, mistakes happen, but lots of hassle all around.

I sold 2 manual transmission cars to Driveway.com. They ACH wire the money to you when you send a pic of the car on the transport. So you can bet I was the one that pulled the car on the transport both times while being directed by the driver.

First gear with e-brake is the most secure way to park a manual vehicle. It's hard to see from the video, but it it's parked on a slight incline as well. Edit fixed e-brake lol.

I was taught to leave it in first with the parking brake on as well, if the car is facing downhill than I leave it in reverse. It's extra insurance if the parking brake fails (which actually did happen with my first car)

Standard practice, extra insurance in case the ebrake fails. If you leave it in neutral the car will roll if the brake fails.
