What options do I have? 2018 Jeep wrangler JL unlimited sport.
2018 Jeep wrangler JL unlimited sport s. The screw stripped, tried most bits and sets to reverse bits and harbor freight extractors. At this point I don’t care if I wreck the screw. Not sure why we have screws here. I have a hammer drill but bits are going any further.

Yeah, happens with cheap drill bits (breakage I mean). Get some better bits. You locked out in this one but there’s nothing worse than a drill bit breaking and leaving the piece in the hole - then you’re really screwed. To clarify: use a large size drill bit to drill out the ...
Damn what drill you got?
And a l/h drill bit.
Sounds crazy but I always find a way to cut a flat slit in bolts that don’t go, heat them hard af, weld a screwdriver to em, and then throw the whole thing away cuz idk wtf I’m doing
Even if you failed at least you tried! And I am a huge fan of just welding shit together.
Sounds like a plan, officer Doofey
Best answer. Not right but best.
Drill the head off. Don't replace it.
it only use is in factory assembly to hold the rotors in place on the line, first time the brakes are changed, they should be tossed. when at this point, just drill the head off
Nah they're so you can put the caliper bolt in that hole to press the rotor off the hub. The little screw there is used to keep the threads clean. If you go without the little screw then the threads get all messy and caliper bolts won't thread in there

Then why would my service manual have the torque specs for them if they weren't meant to be reinstalled?
It's a Jeep, scrap it
Impact driver extractor! https://a.co/d/03vxB1YG
This is one of the first tools I ever purchased! Believe me it has paid for itself.
This looks like a job for cursing
Oh there was 😂
Drill baby drill
For the future, invest in an impact screw driver. Harbor Freight has one for like 12 bucks. Smack it with a hammer and they'll come loose the vast majority of the time.
Heat that sucker red hot and give it a good smack with a ball peen hammer, they come off with a screw driver. I’ve never had to cut one off in the 20 years going this shit.
From the south eh?
Penetration fluid, rubber mallet with a punch, freak out when it doesnt come out, drink beer, yell at girlfriend, yell at mother, yell at whatever relative/external people in the house. At dinner have a mental breakdown and cry then apologize after because you remember all the...
Rubber mallet and a punch?
You keep watching me work on cars, and I'm going to slip the German Shepherd on you...
Just drill the head off and use some vise grips to remove what is left. Or just leave the drilled out bolt there, it doesn't matter.
Drill the head out and remove the threads with vise grips after the rotor is off
I do it this way.
for next time so you don’t end up in the same situation just get an impact screwdriver makes the job 10x easier
I tried that too! I couldn’t get enough grip from the screw head to turn it
I feel you 💀 https://preview.redd.it/p3ddoqh7k2pg1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58596b82145965a58336580791c308cd4f242497
Why does that low key look like the Witcher symbol. Nice job. Id keep this one as art! Hang it in my ~~gallery~~ garage.
😂
Do you have access to a welder?
Unfortunately no
Why more work . These small ass screws . Heat them smack the rotor and done take couple minutes versus Welding onto it to get something to bite on it . Or just drill the head of the screw off
Lube and slow speed and new metal bits
more drill bits lil bro
Drill it out. Go buy a good metal bit. I seen people burn up wood bits doing this. Make sure you have a good metal bit
If mine come out with a screwdriver, they go in the trash after I take them out. If the screwdriver fails, the drill bit never does.
Trade it in
Hey I had to deal with this once. I drilled a small cavity in one edge of the bolt face and used a center punch and a hammer to gently tap it counter clockwise. Same year jeep too
Bigger drill bit, drill the head off the screw
Drill the head. Pull off the rotor. Grind down the rest of the bolt flush. Never fuck with it ever again.
The screw is not needed. Once the head is gone, just take the rotor off

If I don’t feel like drilling them out I’ll take an air hammer with a chisel and try to roll it backwards. The vibration helps loosen the ones that are rusted in there. It’s quicker than drilling. I use the same method for people that lose their lock key on the lock lug nuts. ...
Hit it with an air chisel in a counter clockwise direction. Easy peasy
Once was in a busy dealer parts dept, and some clown was trying to actually 'buy' some of those rotor retention screws. The parts guy was desperately trying to explain that those are assembly line aids only, and aren't stocked. Clown was persistent demanding to order; everyone...
They come with every set of new rotors. Definately not just an assembly line aid. Edit to add : are they needed? No. But they come with every new set
Eh, they are useful if you've got lug bolts. That aside though rotors usually come with them
Dremel a slot and use an impact. Manual type. Hold with tension and hit with hammer.
Hammer it out
Torch or grinder, kill the screw head and the rotor will come off. Extract the stud then install new rotors.
I see you got it out but use some motor oil or WD-40 when you drill, it cuts much better.
Wd-40 has very little lube it in it . Wd-40 is better cleaning agent and agent to remove moisture not for lubing stuff old engine oil better or a penetrating oil
Drill it out
Punch and a hammer punch the side then tap lightly
Been there, what a fucking pain. Gotta drill it out. Get like five bits plus a few smaller sizes to make smaller holes first. Tilt the drill to the sides and rotate in a circle to cut with the sides of the bit. Use an impact drill. I got discouraged once the hole was smooth an...
Well, your first option would have been to unscrew it. BUT, looks like you’re going to have to drill ‘er off 🤷🏽♂️
Glad you got it done.
Use the C40 circle torx bit to get it out Jokes aside, drill. Reverse bits will be you’re friend
Your first option would have been to stop when you realized that you were stripping it. Now you have to drill it out. LOL
It’s got a decent hole started, try to drive a torx bit in there and use it like an extractor
We had the same problem with my son's brakes. Getting that goddamn screw out took hours. Finally I got the damn thing out by just going and buying a nice sharp new bit and it was able to grab enough with my impact drill to get it out.
Cutting fluid on the drill bit and keep stepping up the size
Good job. All you needed were a few pointers.
Im crossing my fingers I dont have to do this. Just did my rear rotors and i didnt have quite the right size allen and was in a pinch. Hopefully I left enough of it intact
Doing brakes without the right tools? D:

Welder
Melt it
Just drill it. They are soft. Hence why it stripped.
Drill the head off. You don't need to go too deep. Go to auto store and get a replacement one so you know what size drill bit you need.
Go slow with the drill and push hard
I keep a set of cobalt drill bits on hand for those for when my impact screwdriver won't break them loose. (Regular HSS bits often won't drill them out because the heat from the brakes can harden the screws. Cobalt bits are much harder than normal steel.) And if the drill bit...
Next time before removing it. Hit it few times. Use impact bit, press hard against it and zap it.
Dremel tool with a abrasive grinding tip
For the record, those screws are usually made of 'Silly Putty' grade alloys, and their heads quickly/easily drill off.
Drill through the head or use a pneumatic hammer and use it to bump it loose
Go to a welding supplies store, wait for someone buying stuff that looks so dirty they could be homeless, offer beer if they blast it out with a torch.
I normally break out the air hammer and just hit the side of the screw until it starts to unscrew. You can also use a punch and hammer. Old trick of the trade. You'd be surprised how well it works.
Drill it out. Just start with a small bit, then keep getting bigger until you have drilled all the metal out. It will come out once there is little left of it.
Replace the entire hub assembly. You can do it with a buddy and a YouTube video. A little more work but definitely less hassle trying to fiddle with that.
Oh, this garbage for the assembly process if hilarious...lol Once you remove it, just hand tighten it. DO NOT impact tighten with the screw driver.

Weld it
Your bits are crap, your being too impatient with it also all you have to do is take off the side of the head in one area and u should be able to break the head off That rotor needs to be replaced now
Bring it to a mechanic if you can’t do your brakes.
Please dont take this the wrong way. But if a stripped unnecessary bolt gives you that much trouble you shouldn't be replacing your brake parts.
engine swaps on standard frames can be straightforward or a nightmare depending on how close the donor engine dimensions are. with Hondas the nice thing is the engine mounts tend to be similar across the lineup within the same era so you might get lucky with bolt spacing. the ...
Why wasn't the drill your second step?
Are the donkey marks from using the hammer drill?
Donkey marks? I haven’t heard them called that before. Now I’ll know the lingo for next time. I was frustrated and tried to hit the head with a sledge hammer to move it from being frozen.
Looks like you got woodpeckers working on your car. I guess you need an expert and open your wallet.
You could have loosened that with a chisel. Strike one side in an anticlockwise direction
For future reference, an impact drill and a hammer drill are not necessarily the same thing.
New hub
I normally hit these stripped screws with a hammer and chisel or an air hammer works every time
Drill it out.
You obviously didn't try drilling the head off or you'd have it off already. Get your drill out again and actually drill it
At this point I say what you can do is be persistent. Get a screw driver or a center punch or a flat head what ever is best and a hammer. You gotta place the punch on the edge of that screw and use a hammer on it to slowly break it loose. I've had a same dilemma when I was try...
Get the broken stud and use it to hammer the other piece out.
And taking the rotor off will help...
Have you tried an extractor or easy outs ?
Die grinder the head off. With the rotor gone you have plenty of room to grab the stud. Btdt on my last brake change.
You can use torx for that kind of problem. Just hammer it in.
I am amazed that old typing is still putting the work in
Get another vehicle
Wheel studs are driven in from the back. You drive them out with a hammer.
Not a stud. Holding the rotor on.
Take ball end of a ball peen hammer and put on center then smack that hammer with another hammer. Only need once or twice and should spin right out
The one simple thing you should have used from the start is an impact driver. Not a power tool, just the simple old kind you hit with an hammer. Those have max torque at the exact same time the force inwards is at the max, so they won’t slip and strip the screw head. Now, if i...
I purposely break them off tbh. They serve no purpose once the tires are on at the factory line
Drill baby drill
Extractor bit worked for an explorer
Chisel it with a flat pointed chisel. Do it along the outer edge in the counterclockwise direction. Those screws just help hold the rotor in position during assembly but aren’t necessary to have in there. An impact driver (tool you hit with a hammer that spins the bit) is the ...
Oxyacetylene magic, of course!
Use an easy out. I’ve done it on three jeeps. Works great!
If you’re replacing the rotor, I use a grinder and grinder the rotor and the fastener.
Happens all the time. Angle grinder to cut a slot for a flat head, heat it \~10minutes with a high temp heat gun, apply penetrating oil and wait \~30minutes. Then use a flat head bit preferably attached to a drill or ratchet for better torque and screw it out. Once out throw t...
Stop. There’s a better way. Take the rotor off and see if it can be hammered out without taking the hub apart. Just pay a shop to take care of it if the hub has to come out. No point in drilling it, to get a new one in there it has to be installed from the back so it’s gonna h...
Impact driver? Not like an electric driver, the kind that’s a big hunk of metal with a spring inside, you hit it with a hammer. Like this: https://a.co/d/0gSyqqaF

Maybe weld a bolt to it, so you can get it out with a wrench.
Best tip that can be given, dont put it back with tue new rotors. Hahaha
As some child molester would say....Drill baby drill...
JIS 2 OR 3. NOT PHILIPS
Weld a nut on top of this.
