A squirrel ate my fuckin ride

How long was that car sitting unused lol
Long enough for the squirrel to think it was a deluxe nut storage unit.
Had this happen, the car was used 3-4 times a week. Only realized it when all of a sudden the honk stopped working, and when we opened the hood, saw all this stuff. Luckily the chewed wires weren't anything vital, and were able to rewire. It's amazing how much stuff they broug...
You think a car needs to be sitting unused to have a mouse problem? The mouse that's having a party in my car disagrees.
Mice literally ate and removed our sun roof motor and wires on our Mazda 3.
My old supervisors Honda civic was completely totaled from rats chewing up the electrical wiring.
Some wires have a soy-based coating on them, and they eat that. They'll eat regular wires too just for funsies, apparently.
I have a Mazda3 with a sun roof and also see mice in my garage once in a while. Now I'm scared. I have traps set up, but I still can't catch those little bastards.
Check your homeowners insurance, they usually cover rodent damage. Wiring harness damage etc can be very expensive
My car insurance covers it fortunately but I’ve got a $1k deductible lol
Its comprehensive car insurance
Guess the squirrel really wanted a new ride with all the extras included.
At this point the car belongs to the squirrel. OP is just the landlord paying insurance.
Same bro. And my next door neighbor. We use our vehicles every day.
Honestly makes me feel a lot better that it isn’t just me lol ty
Had the same shit happen to me during a winter storm. No Truck for the whole winter.
Damn thats ...... nuts
Having the wire harness fucked up is one of the easiest ways to total a car. Removing and reinstalling those will be a bitch
This is the worst news ever 😭
Lol..I died at the title 😅🤣😂🫢
If not house, why house shaped lol
That soy-based wiring is a real son of a bitch. Back in 2020/2021 a bunch of my neighbours had thousands of dollars of damage done. One had her car burn to the ground on the highway because the nests were so bad. Good reminder to run your car from time to time and check under ...
Yeah I use this car legit every day but I’ll have to be much more diligent about checking under the hood more often. The car is pretty new so I def assumed it’d be fine for a while lol
https://preview.redd.it/mookpzz4lgog1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98427734cfeadd18531f66678dcf9b74024f2a78
My girlfriend used her car like weekly while in college and one winter week a squirrel did this exact same thing. The car ran (not well) and she made a few mins from her apartment before she realized her car was in limp mode and wouldn’t go over 5 mph. Opened the hood and ther...
At least the damn thing warned you guys lol
I would rephrase that to: a fuckin squirrel ate my car. Your car doesn't deserve this ill treatment from both you and the squirrel
Nono, I’m saying my car fucks bc she’s a babe, I’d never insult Carla
It’s a little 🤏🏻 bit funny tho sry OP
That would drive me nuts
Rats ate my gas tank last year. It, in fact, sucks.
Can’t have shit round here
I giggled. The funny part is that, squirrels are so fucking cute you would still pet the damn thing if you got your hands on him.
im a vegan but i was and am ready to beat a squirrel's furry ass with a broom if they were still in my engine
Stop keeping your nuts in the car..
Happened to me when I got home from school, some of the door handles were gone.
You should have put more provisions in the lease for this
Thats literally a forest under the hood. OPs car was a lawn ornament
Nope, I drive this car literally every day
Not necessarly....could be a homeless crackhead who chose your engine trunk to live in
That’s what I said; a squirrel
that didn't happen overnight
That sucks. Though I'm sure you'll give your boss an excuse they've never heard before. "Sorry I can't come in today, a squirrel ate my car."
I'm a housewife so I don't even get to do that 😭
This happened to my Corolla many times. The best product to prevent it is Messina's Wildlife spray. It's by the rodent deterrent at Menards and farm stores. Spray your engine bay down with it a couple times per month. It works.
ty for the tip! I'm hoping with the weather getting warmer they'll leave her alone once I get my car back but I'll def take some preventative measures as well lol
Wait till you run the ac/heat
Charge that mofo rent
Stupid whore squirrels.
*nested Your engine is now a squirrel bed.
This is why everyone and their mother will tell you to drive it daily. If it was sitting that long you have bigger issues than that nest

Glad it's not just me, my thought was how long did that mfer sit for??
Title should be “A fucking squirrel ate my car”
Wait till you check the air filter…
Good news is that's easily fixable. Bad news is you need to buy wire connectors and wire cutters and possibly more wire if there isn't enough already there to reconnect everything. Car company's have a bad habit of just barely using enough with no slack.
[Hey me too. Just found it yesterday. And this car was driven every day at least a bit.](https://imgur.com/a/eP8wJDy)
One times squirrels ate through the fuel line of my truck because it was made from soy based plastic
More like your car eat a fuck ton of leaves
Rats ate through wires that led to my ECM. My car completely died in the middle of a left turn.. it was great and costed over $1250 to fix.
This happened to me, they took the insulation n shit. I bought one of those electric devices, cleaned up the engine bay with degreaser and sprayed it down with peppermint oil to keep the rodents away. I just do it once a month and it's fine
Well they were nice to you, I remember that once a Raccoon gave birth inside the trunk of my fathers car and then They ate the rear seats.
I guess that's one way to save money from gas
Sure it wasn't a rat?
Pretty sure but I suppose it's possible. I live in suburbia and there's squirrels everywhere and no rats to be seen lol
Oh yeah that’s some good mechanic gore right there. Got a large part of the main wire bundle. Good stuff. Not for you ofcourse. But this is what I as a mechanic live for. Gonna be expensive though. Sorry about that.
Thankful for insurance for once in my life lol
Ah a true artist
That happened to me in Florida years ago. I had my work car parked under a palm tree and I went away for a week and left the car sitting there undriven for 7/8 days. I came back and my AC wasn’t working. It was over 100 degrees outside so I took it to the mechanic right away a...
Yeah I’m prob gonna start keeping my car in the garage now, even in the summer lol
Wire covering is made from Soy, it definitely attracts rodents etc.
I got lucky. I use my vehicle every day and went to get an oil change and they found acorns in the oil filter. squirrel made a nest under the engine cover. Luckily no other damage. Another day and it could've been a different story.
I had this happen to me recently and it cost me hundreds. first off find a good mechanic who won't charge you more than 500 for repairs. then get some peppermint oil and put in some drops in the engine bay area. I do it once every day but once every 3 days is probably what mos...
And I thought I was having a rough go!
Hope this helps lol
Ain’t got no gas innit!
Did you last drive that in 2001? Thats YEARS of damage
Was last inspected late 2025 and I drive it every day. Squirrels work fast bruh
The wires in cars are protected by a soy based plastic. Animals love to eat them.
Buy a leaf blower nuke it from outer space
I let my truck sit for 3 days and a squirrel ate my injector wires. That repair has been a real pia.
this was a huge problem during the covid times. i had my wiring eaten by squirrels, insurance covered it, so will yours. mine was $1600, but was talking to a mechanic and he was telling me he had fixed a bunch of cars with the same problem, one of them had $6500 in damage.
Damn. That does suck
Never let you car sit for any extended period of time.
I’ve used this car every day for the past 1-2 years
That does indeed suck, but that title made me laugh out loud.
Its there car now
This happened to my neighbour
That car would have been sitting ducks for a long time for this to happen
Awwww Nutz.
Simple reason. They started making wiring coverings from soy-based insulation. They started doing that around 2010.
What were they made of before? Curious if it’s an animal rights thing or cost thing lol
Check for coolant leaks, they are attracted to it. Could be minuet, could be nothing, could be me and they were having a pool party in my engine bay.
Bro opened the hood and found a full Airbnb listing. 🐿️🍂
Man, your vehicle does not have electricity now. A new engine is expensive too. Might get a new vehicle though.
I love my car 😭 I’ll honestly cry if she’s actually totaled, 2022 Prius I got <2 years ago

when was the last time you opened your hood?
Did you just get back from a deployment lol?
No dude I drive this car legit every day 😭
Now I understand why I saw a picture the other day of a car with mothballs and owl statues scattered around it.
I had this happen to me. They said the wiring covers have some sort of oil and they like the taste of it.
Those little critters are awful, my friend has a mini cooper and apparently, those cars are squirrels’s favorite snack
My FIL was on the highway in his van and smelled a strong roasted nuts smell and pulled over. When he popped the hood it was FULL like FULLY FULL of nuts 🤣 And the van couldnt be saved. Insurance should cover squirrels and chipmunks 🤣
Been there, but it was a Bunny!
That's crazy, or something
I know rats love doing this but a squirrel? I thought they only prefer housing in trees not cars
We lost a big tree last year so maybe all the good spots were taken already lol
A friend of mine had this happen and the guy who fixed her car said that the wiring is coated in a soy-based material. Apparently it is like candy to mice and squirrels. You can use peppermint oil or hot pepper spray under the hood to keep them away!
You're auto policy will probably cover the damage under Comprehensive. Mine did.
Sorry to hear this but I had the same happen and it was not fun. Was only home from the car from not running for only 6 days.

People wonder why I absolutely despise squirrels. Depending on where you live, an air gun solves these problems pretty quickly.
That’s nuts!
Eat the squirrel.
Squirrel: "The red wires are extra zesty!"
That's probably happening to my car rn bc I barely drive lol
At least it wasn’t your drivin car
That sucks, I’ve had a similar problem. I started tiewrapping a rodent repellent in a non functional area under the hood (I use Cab Fresh - there are others)…seems to work…you may need to replace every few months
How come those squirrels got in there!
You couldn’t pay me to fix that
Why was your car fucking?
There have been several attempts at a class action lawsuit against carmanufacturers because they use soy based materials to make wiring harnesses. Rodents and squirrels in the like are super attracted to the taste and smell and they have ruined tens of thousands of engines ...
Ooof, I was pretty pissed when I caught squirrels tearing up my $1,700 patio furniture set for nesting fluff, but this is so much worse... Condolences.
I heard when you want to leave a car sitting you should put dryer sheets in various places because they don't like the strong scent. Idk if it's true ot not though.
Moth balls too
The squirrel owns the car now 🥜
Squirrels are insanely destructive. I legit have sprayed the underside of my hood with expired bear spray because they keep eating the damn sound deadening insulation.
won't that circulate into your ac system?
No it didn't, the car is still there. Shame about the wires tho.
Many auto makers now make the coating for wires out of soy. It smells sweet when heated and attracts rodents. Here's more info [at this link](https://www.box-kat.com/blogs/box-kat-blog/full-list-of-cars-with-soy-based-wiring-2025-update).
Had almost the same issue with our 2008 Honda Odyssey, we had taken it to a shop because of a different issue and hadn't looked under the hood, it was far worse than this but we were lucky in that they hadn't chewed through anything but the hood noise dampening (?). We don't d...
Leave your hood up. Not as cozy for them to move in.
A squirrel hid In a work truck for a company I worked for in the past. The yard dog ripped out everything it could grab from underneath the truck within 10 minutes lol. Hoses, cables, plastic... Everything!
Squirrel did the same thing to my car this winter. Ate two of my wife’s ignition coil wires. Took the to get replaced and they did it again after only 7 hours of sitting in the driveway.
When we were car shopping there was a Volt a couple cities over that was interesting, hired a mechanic to take a look. Found a rodent nest in the engine compartment. We crossed that one off the list. Electrical faults are the worst.

haha stupid idiot
Waiting for my friend who hasn’t moved his car in 8months to realize what a mistake he’s made. Fuckers are always under his car.
Top left of the leaves looks like a squirrel
Yeah, we lost a car to squirrels too. Street parking. Car used daily, but idiots had been feeding them, so the population exceeded the natural spaces for nesting. Took out the wiring harness and in many cars, it isn't worth the cost of replacing it, as the car needs to be pret...

I hope that sick fuck gets testicular torsion.
I think you mean "A fucking squirrel ate my car"..., your car was a victim in all this too...
Same thing happened to us last year. Had the car for maybe a month and drove it pretty much every single day lol. Mfers work fast. Best of luck
Woah, that's nuts!
People probably think I'm a psycho when I go stalking around the place with a pistol and headlamp at the sound of skittering. Probably looks kinda meth-head paranoid. But this shit right here is why. Tried every "repellent" and "deterrent" scarecrow ass trick in the b...
Those are some really clean wire cuts for a squirrel. Rodents like wire insulation because it tastes like peanuts. But their teeth don’t cut copper easily and it isn’t food so they mostly leave it. Mostly. This is my truck after I camped unknowingly over a pack rat ne...
A friend had such severe rat issues with a brand new toyota hilux that she was given a new one. The second one was rat chewed already from the dealership. The materials they make cars of now is just severely attractive to pests and we must take precautions.
Our problem was a rat. Literally totaled the car. Took 4 days to eat the wire harness under the dash. Would have cost $7000 to fix. Got a check for $9500 from the insurance company. Bought another car of the same model for $8500
It's not yours anymore, nature claims it.
Was the car sitting long? Also is there extra wire under the molded plastic there? Would seem like a feasible fix to crimp and heatshrink new connections if they're all color-coded.
No . That's just .... Okay year dude he fuckin ate your car
Mothballs under the car
I had rodents chew the injector wires in my car once
Just soldier the wires back together. Thats what we would do back in my day instead of complaining on Reddit.
My man, the wires are in the squirrel’s stomach. If it were that simple of a fix I’d already have my car back lmfao this isn’t some 2002 Honda civic it’s a 22 Prius with enough electrical cabling to take you to the moon and back a few times
This is a high voltage component. I would highly advise against attempting a repair like this unless you understand exactly what you are doing and have the proper equipment to power down the high voltage system. This is something that could lead to fire, injury or death if not...
